hi,

I'm fed up with this cooler noises and I'm going to make my PC silent.

My config is:

MB: Asus P5B
CPU: Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz + standart box cooler
RAM: 2*1024 Mb 667 Mhz
Video: The cheapest Ge-Force to fit this Mainboard
Sound: ESI Juli@
Power Supply: 450 Watt
Case: Microlab don't know the model, but it's quite usual ATX, not too big and not too small.
HDD: I have 3 HDD's, and they are also quite usual =)

I have 3 coolers - on CPU, on PS and on the case.

So, I'm not tech guru, but basically I have 3 ideas:

1) Long Cables (for monitor, mouse, keyboard and souncard)and putting the PC at the other end of the flat (the cables should be about 15 meters long)

2) Water cooling

3) Passive cooling

What can you reccomend? What are advantages and disadvantages of this three methods? Maybe more ideas?

The PC works 24\7 most of the time.

Any comments appreciated, thanks a lot)

a good cooler for the cpu like thermaltake maxorb.
a 12" or 8" silent fan on the box.

water cooling is the best... but u need toknow what u are doing.

long cables is a solutionh but it wil degrade the quality of audio and video.

and maybe getting a better box for ur pc like collermaster cosmos or lianli           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

Id rather say that passive cooling is the best if you want complete silence except for the harddrives since you need a fan on the radiator to cool down the water that circles in the system. Id rather recommend watercooling if your after some good OC and push the FSB a few MHZ <-- geektalk lolz. I read in a review that they managed to crank that little CPU to 3,42 GHZ.

Get this baby with a low rpm fan http://www.silentpcreview.com/article251-page2.html

For the harddrive id look into a pair of these http://www.tuniq.com.tw/Cooler/sanctum/sanctum.html

I don´t know if you got it but your Northbridge chipset on the Mobo maybe has a small fan? if so then one of these will help http://www.casecooler.com/zablnoco.html

watercooling is for sure the "coolest" & quietest way, but also the most expencive.
i just bought some components to reduce the noise from my PC (asus maximus formular, core2duo 2,66 Ghz, grafic card with passive cooling).
if you want spend arround 300€ i can recoment you the following stuff, i am realy happy with the result.

Passive is obviously the most quiet since a water system needs both pump and fan.
And by putting in a silent low RPM fan or two you hardy will not get a more noisy system than watercooling.

It's certainly possible to build a completely passive computer that keep acceptable temperatures, but if you get really silent fans it's usually worth having them since they are pretty much inaudible but helps the cooling a lot.

If you want a CPU cooler that should be able to use a fan with low noise and airflow or completely passive it seems like the Schyte Ninja is the best since the fins are quite sparsely spaced.
Otherwise the Ultra Extreme 120 and Noctua coolers also work fine even with very low airflow.

There are passive PSU's that can manage to power a regular DAW, but the the fan in some active PSU's is very quiet anyway and set to only turn on when the temps get higher than ideal.
So if you want a good reliable PSU I would just look for a very quiet one like the corsairs.

With some nice ducting in the case you should get by ok with just one fan in the PSU and one in the chassis and you'll get pretty much no audible noise, apart from HD and CD, and good enough temps unless you planning on breaking overclocking records.

Case Fan: Nexus or Noctua.
CPU Cooler: Scythe Ninja (Noctua silent cooler has been discontinued)
120mm for the PSU if you don't have such. reccomended: Corsair HX520.

About putting the computer out of the room, there's a solution of vga/ps2 over ethernet - We use it in the television studios, it works good, but you would also need CD rom (long USB) and a long cable for audio expension box / audio cables.

cheers.

2 More things you can do:
put sound absorption pads inside the computer, and also get a pc case with plastic cover it absorbs better than the ones made of metal cover           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

that works very well, but only if your pc is already silent enought... and unfortunetly it can increase the temperatur, but in my case it was no problem!

I use core duo with Spire Fourier IV Fan (cpu fan using heatpipes and you can switch the fan off/on... most of the time i use it passive)

graphiccard: passive Ati

2 case-fan 120mm, with voltage control

low-noise 500W enermax power supply

and i really can't hear noises anymore... just the "click" of the power button

thanks for tips!

for now, i have placed some foam-rubber inside the case, and surrounded the cÐse with some huge pillows =))

(sure, i left the way for air to go through the case)

That help a lot for now)

The Tuniq Tower 120 is one of the best CPU coolers out there. I use it myself on a Q6600 quad core, and I have yet to see the cpu temp run above 110F, usually hovering around 100F under moderate to heavy use. It's in an Antec P182 case, and the loudest component became the fan on the video card. I bought a new video card with a heatsink only, and now the loudest component is the top exhaust casefan, which has an adjustable speed.

Watercooling & passive will never be totally silent. After considering the costs of a better, sound insulated case, high performance fans on all components, hard drive dampening, water cooling if you consider it, etc. you can probably pay for a good chunk, if not all, of the parts needed run the machine in another room.

But it kind of comes down to how many & what kind of peripherals you are using. You'd have to have some sort of video repeater, usb hub to act as a repeater, possibly firewire repeater (if you are using firewire audio like lots of folks), or running long audio lines perhaps from a mixing board to your soundcard in the other room.

But given that I'm not doing any mic recording, the noise from the PC only really comes into effect when I am mixing or mastering. It's quiet enough that I can live with it, as in total the sound is somewhere below -60 dB when about 1.5 feet away (my sound meter doesn't go any lower). But some day it would be nice to have the room totally quiet.
