Hello

I have 200 $ and want to buy new softsynth and learn it "inside-out" .

The two that I thinking about right now are Sylenth1 and Zebra 2 . They both sound great IMO and I hear only good things about this 2 .

I have now Komplete 7 that include many of NI's synths but I think that they are not in the same level as Sylenth1 and Zebra 2 .

Any advice and suggestions for another synths besides this 2 is welcomed

Thanks

Sylenth1 is the easiest by far.
Something similar could be Diversion:

in that price range I'd definitely go with Sylenth personally. Zebra is fantastic as well, but I find myself reaching for sylenth more than I reach for Zebra.

Sylenth is IMO the perfect synth to learn on, because it has classic architecture, a really great sound and if you learn sylenth inside out you can move to most other VA synths (and some synths in general) with ease and know what's going on.

faxinadu - which one I can buy that cheaply ? And does HW synths in this price range can be compared to Zebra/Sylenth soundwise ?

willsanquil - thanks for the explanation . Do you think there is a reason that you reach more for Sylenth1 or you just like it more ? Also would like to know if Zebra more complicated to learn ?

sylenth , one of best sounding and not complictaed to learn but depend a bit your taste.. this synth you are rather easy in the pop / club kind of comercial sound caractere even if it depend how you program it, for this it s really good, better than zebra imo.. if you like today sound of commercial stuff sylenth would be the way to go.(but who need more of this? )
if you are more into psyche stuff, i would pick something with more modulation ,fm ect.. and more intriguing sound caractere as go to synth, maybe the freeware synth1 would be good to start and then buy one that suit you.. once you have a idea .
or maybe a nord 2 rack second hand if you like the sound.. this synth have great interface to learn

i also have both sylenth and zebra and i hardly use sylenth at all. sylenth does sound good, but zebra is my go to synth. actually they're not really comparable. sylenth, just as willsanquil said, has a classic architecture and zebra has a sort of semi-modular design.

sylenth sure is easier to learn and it's also easier to get the a decent psy bass out of it.
zebra has a far steeper learning curve, but it's much more flexible. you can do almost any kind of sound with it. it can do classic subtractive synthesis like sylenth but also fm, additive, wavetables and whatnot. you can also build your own signal path by dropping and rearranging the modules. for what it does zebra imho still is the the synth with the best (easiest) user interface. it only shows you what you need to see at the moment and has a clear graph of the signal path instead of these confusing patch cables.

they're really two quite different synths with different strengths. for sounds i'd use sylenth for, i normally take ace, which sounds great but isn't nearly as easy to use (here you have those patch cables and can do circular signal paths and so on...).

surge and zebra are great synths, and I totally agree that both are more flexible and cover more sonic territory - but I would never in a million years suggest them as an introductory synth for someone who is learning synthesis.

@whysolazy - the reason I reach for sylenth more is that I can easily and quickly get high quality classic subtractive synth sounds out of it with a minimum of menu diving and modulation routing. When I have a synth that can do everything under the sun I often get lost and lose direction, whereas if I have a limited toolset I'm pushed to really explore that and get the best I can out of it. This was especially true in the first year or two of learning synthesis.

For instance, bass. Making a bass in sylenth is super easy and straightforward. Making a bass in zebra there are a billion filter types and envelope types and on and on and on. It's amazing if you have a great grasp of synthesis but yeah its definitely worlds more complicated.

Honestly though...I hate to say it, and I'm probably an asshole for saying it, but U-he is actually making and developing new software all the time and you'll definitely get discounts on new zebra updates (if they're not outright free) if you buy that, whereas Lennar Digital doesn't seem to be active at all in terms of developing new products or anything (but I think that's because so many pirated it...)....so if I were you I'd pirate sylenth and buy zebra.

Then again, that goes against what you're asking for in the '1 synth to learn' thing...            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

sylenth for me is a cheese machine.. that synth wouldn t exist, like the virus.. there would be less cheese out there, even dark leads on these synths have a kind of cheesy/pop caractere that i don t like anymore.
clavia have a way more intresting sound caractere to me that lead to more intriguing music i find, more mystical, sound is more raw.

dunno if some would agree with me? it s maybe just my impression but i think its true..i remember users who had both synth like me.. virus and nord.. and for cheese or commercial caractere the virus was picked lot of the times..

Cheese comes from the user not the synth

You can make horrible sounding music with great machines and you can make amazing sounding music with freeware            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

as you said you have komplete 7, so...why you dont focus on massive first? its a great synth and when you learn it you gonna love it...

for me is one of the best vst outher, with these great wavetables, modulation, filters etc

sylenth is great synth too, but you can learn to use it in very sort time...its so easy to use it and fast you can make so great sounds!

i work now only with few vsts and massive and sylenth are 2 of them...

Keep your money and download this one:

It sounds much better than any commercial vsti that i tried!

Get some cheap hardware like Dave Smith Mopho for your cash.
