also all decent soundcards have a head amp.. the quality of those in the low price range soundcards is usually the problem.

When i had RME Fireface 400 together with Presonus Central Station i did some a/b tests with head amps of them. Normally K701 without headamp can be too agressive on top especially in high volume, but with RME i found it even more agressive, when Presonus was silky and very smooth on everywhere. I can turn volume super high and enjoy hours still.. Once i had to send Central Station to their service when electricity peak (i think) broke mainboard of it, and it cost me another 250 euro (on top of the 500 euro from brand new). Even then i paid it most painlessly, because i was missing that sound for moths waiting for maintenance return.
I think i found this setup just by luck (finally some luck), later on i have been hearing that someone else's too setting presonus up with AKG's.           - - - - -

if you're into DIY i've heard incredibly good things about these tube headphone amp kits, from people whose ears i really trust:

Thanks for the tip! Interesting stuff their have and not so expensive for tube ones..

Also i have been thinking this one
http://www.musicdirect.com/p-6915-ciaudio-vhp-2-headphone-amp.aspx

I should to get know them with my headphones somewhere before buying (which is difficult), because headamps walk hand in hand by headphones, and headphones are not also different by manufacture but by single units too. Yes you can have exact same model of headphones two of them and their sound different. Not much but their are uniques.

Taisto exactly my experience with the rme , i had just my 880 and was never using them ...on my metric halo i love their sound !

Its the same for rme a/d , d/a convertion but not as much prononced

about amps the qeslabs is supposed to be great but with high impedance headphone like seinheiser and beyer from what i have read

i also never liked the preamp on the rme ff400 they sound to thin and strong on the highs..

but i really dont care about headphone output.. always mix in speakers.

but for people not able to do that its better to invest on some quality preamp and some decent headphones!           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

Yea, its good to experiment and see that more hyped and expensive staff is not always necessarily the best choice. Even i liked RME's audio interfaces more spacier headroom and clarity what they can create and i used to did better mixes because of it i think. Nowdays i turned back to M-audio, because i prefer more colorful and warm structures.. its like choosing between G-force and Ati graphic drivers, Ati is more warm and cartoonlike what i after for. Also in my experience RME interfaces dont work on every PC game right..

In case you are lucky owner pair of 'high quality' virgin bought M-audio Studiophile dx4 'studiomonitors' may better headphone setting come very handy

Do you guys know how VRM box coloring the sound and in which way it does as a headamplifier..? I may invest one (and taking that money from my studiomonitor savings)..           - - - - -

wait you misunderstood..

rme is awesome... the head pre is kinda bad.
ad/da are super clean and detailed (maybe a little on the thin side) but much better than the native instruments komplete 6

plus drivers are super solid and asio works really low.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

it also depend of the monitors, on something like dynaudio rme steril sound wound be as unplesant as on some adam a7 or ns10. same as with the headphone, i thought my adam p22 sterile for years... but it s was a lot cause of the rme caractere in fact ,i like more warmer musical sound. rme is on the thin edgy side but that could help to make warmer mix but it was really unplesant for me that i was not really enjoying my sound or the music i listen

for the a/d it s more a problem , i dont want what that pass to the ad to be colored that way ,i already did shoutout, rme convertion like on adi 2 fireface 800 make everyhting that pass into the a/d more digital and thin but i m talking subbtle ! it s convertion ,a lot of things affect way more the sound, but on a full tune for somone using lot of hardware it will color the tune in a bad way to me ,but it depend taste maybe ..

i agree on the points since i worked it with dynaudio for 5 years..
the speaker of choice does make a difference and indeed rme has that kind of surgical clean sound to it.

its good when mixing but not great when recording.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

ppl like more straight cord on headphone usuallly, i have the colied and it s no problems if you use it close to the headphone output , around 1,5 meter or less.
the cable colied it s not laying on the ground like with a long straight cable..but for use it more far straight cables are way better imo

My concern was the audio quality diference between the two. I also saw some posts about fake straight versions.
I ordered the coiled version , I have small home studio so 1.2 meters is absolutely good for my use .

Thanks again guys for posting and recomednig

i think it will need a bit of time before sounding as it should..a few weeks maybe.. but maybe it s my ears that got used and the sound is identical to the first time i pluged in but doubt it , it sound a bit more relaxed now i think

I guess u have already ordered but my $0.02 - i really like my coiled cable, because i have to plugged into my laptop on my desk and i can move all around on my wheelie chair and the headphone cable moves with me, then when i wheel back i dont run over it.           --
