the guy who recomened me the m50 recomended it to me too ,he use it.
here what he mailed me
Audio Technica AT-M50 has the best bass of any headphone out. If you're going to mix on headphones look into the Focusrite VRM..
he is sponsorised by focusrite but it s first time he adviced me to buy something from a brands he is sponsorised by ,so probably not pimping.. |

imo graph don't mean everyhting, look at the M50 and dt 770 ,i know artists that get good sound out of both.. dt 990 is probably great too .. if you look at the 880 these are some of the flastest headphone but the m50 have a better balance for electronic music kick and bass, that can lead to better translation
also what really matter is how well you hear eq and compresion, you need to hear slight adjustement and on some cans it dont hapen |

I'd recommend the HD600's, without a doubt the best cans I've ever used. Very, very wide frequency response, and very detailed and flat, transparent sound. I use them for checking finished masters on all the time. They translate really well to my ATC monitors, which I think says a LOT!
I tried the 650's but didn't like them as much, I felt they were less transparent, but it's all down to personal taste really. Both cans will need a great headphone amp to really shine, although the 600's still sound great plugged directly into my Cowon J3 portable player, with lossless FLAC files.
If I was going to upgrade again it would be to something like the Stax electrostatics, but I really don't feel the need to at the moment!

I think Beyerdynamics are nice but pretty harsh in the highs..try listening to a femal vocal recording and you will know what i mean. I own the DT 900 as well tho..but the best ive heard are the Ultrasone like this one.
http://digitalaudioservice.com/ultrasone-pro-2900.html?___store=english
very detailed and well balanced stereo image and awesome bass and ferquency responce in general. Its really a pleasure to listen to them and ive heard and sold a lot of different headphones.
might not be the flattest curve ever but i`s definatly good enough and you can listen on them for hours if you want..wich i always had a problem with other headphones.
should be a great option for electronic and accoustic music..
cheers

"proper headphone amp" keeps coming up. I see on Focusrite's website that the VRM box is dual function as the room simulator and headphone amp.
does the VRM qualify as a "proper" headphone amp would you say? or what are the characteristics that make one proper?

the 250ohm are normally for studio use.. the 80ohm sound too loud and unfocused.
but the best is a proper head amp for any decent headphone to take the best out of them..

Thats odd, i sent the 250 back to the shop as they hurt my ears and settled with the 80ohm which were fine. |

i was close to buy the hd 800 or audeze lcd 2 and did some reseach on these. if you really want good headphone these are supposed to be a good upgrade from everyhting listed in this thread except the stax .
hd800 are very critical and detailed with very open soundstage, these are suposed to be great reference but with light low end, the audeze are totally flat from around 1000/1500hz to 20 hz with great low ,warm sound and good depth . |

@ orange: I ask b/c this is on their website:
"When considering headphone impedance, the general principle is that higher impedance headphones typically have a flatter frequency response, however they require more power from the headphone amplifier to provide the same output level as headphones with a lower impedance. Having said this, the VRM Box's headphone amplifier should be powerful enough to drive higher impedance headphones at a high enough level for most purposes."

thank you for the link to the Pro-Ject unit, and the tip re: soundcards. --
