All im looking for is some card with good mp3 encoding which will output my digital music, and other application in a good, clean quality.

What I know, is that Turtle Beach is a semi-professional sound card. That's all. Hope it helps. :-) |

I know there's a Sound Blaster Live! MP3 Edition or something like that. Maybe this will be good? |

Generally I'd recommend on Creamware products only to someone who realy doesn't have any real professional gear, because it can help you close the edges. For proffesional studio's/home stuio's, I realy can't think about a worse choice, except SBLive. |

Well, Shivas you misunderstood me a little.. ;o)
I don't think that SB cards suck in anyway.. But - These are not fully professional products.. They are excellent for wide public to consume and the sound is good enough, but as to more pro handling, they are not 'the best' of what one can have..
About digital outputs - there are usually two kinds:
1. Optical - most of the new MD's has it and also all the nu Hi fi systems usually will have one - They are good.
2. Coaccial - That is more professional digital connection that uses RCA like plugs and works via electric pulse.
Generally about cards:
I really don't have enough info to b particular ion this subject, but: Audio cards can b divided into two categories - Pro and non pro. The pro cards would cost ( in Israel ) from around 1800 - 2000 NIS and up, and will b divided into couple of more subgroups - the ones with DSP and the ones without ( DSP - Digital Sound Processor I think ;o) allows the card to make it's own calculation of logarithms and thus to make it easier on the main CPU ). The non pro cards are those in the range of 100 - 1500 NIS and they offer large variety of possibilities, but aren't good as the ones above in a few categories - especially in the quality of analog outputs and other connections.
Well I guess that all I know about soundcards..

What about the usb? Is it considered to have a leaner output then standard analog soundcard? (nonpro)
Btw: can you recommand a rather cheap yet clean sound cardlaster?
Thanks, best regards, Sambu :) |

ShivaS, just a little correction; The SB Live only has electrical digital out. The thing is that, from what I've heard, the SB Live uses 48KHz output frequency and then downsamples it to 44.1KHz on the digital output. This kind of downsampling is destructive and the result is a mediocre digital output.
If you're going to use a portable minidisc I'd recommend a card with an optical output, such as the "VideoLogic Sonic Vortex2". It's nothing fancy, but it works great for everyday use and putting tracks to your MD-player :)
