im currently using a novation launchpad and a novation zero sl mk2...works like a charm...and the best part is, it automatically maps not only with ableton but with any other daw like cubase/logic/reason/sonar/pt/fl etc.. and also with plugin instruments and fx...so if ure only gonna use ableton the apc 40 is a good buy.. but if u plan on using other daws, id recommend the sl mk2 |

I think novation Nocturn Keyboard 49 would be sufficient, it can do the same what sl49 mkII does, but has no faders and less buttons. Although it has only 8 endless rotary encoders (which wont stay at one position like limited pot knobs), and 8 buttons. It works through automap and because of that you dont have just 8 encoders but unlimited number of them. So you can assign 8 encoders and 8 buttons to different functions in every synth/fx/daw independantly, so as you see its limitless. Read about it and watch tuts on YT too see how usefull is automap.
Aha... one more thing, it does not have hardware MIDI OUT, just usb connection ;P but who cares about it in the softsynth era? ;D |

Depends.
Do you need knobs? keys? buttons?
What are you going to do with the controller?

Novation Nocturn.. i love it ! good for direct control over plugins or instruments during deep home sessions as well
as being a really nice "knob" controller for live twiddling..
i believe it's specially compatible with Ableton.. wait no.. that's nonsense.. it's just automap-compatible which is niiiiice.

Also i enjoy my Icon: i.control. 9 fader, 18 button... controller which i use it for effects... could be used more as a mixer.
i got the alluminum cover with it for tough travel situations. it works. (waaaay better then the Korg version)

indeed.. i bet this APC thing would be best for Ableton. looks nize..
