hey,
I have only recently began mixing psytrance. I own 2 CDJ200 and a DJM400. I have quikly gained interest in the art, so i have decided i want to start producing. I dont know much about equipment and hardware, so i have a few questions. Is it possible to connect my current equipment to cubase/reason (i own a pc laptop) and make good use of it? or do i need to sell the stuff and start gathering equipment from scratch?

Any advice related to my situation is very much apreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Producing is something totally different than mixing. Your dj equipment won't be of any use (unless you do a mixed live/dj set but that's future music if you start producing and stands apart from the productionprocess).

Doesn't mean you have to sell it though...           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

I highly doubt you can sync your equipment with any of the sequencers.

You need MIDI controller.

For more info on that you can always use the search

O and yes...Advise is that you use a powerful desktop instead of a laptop for production...always helps

Don't sell your cdjs for production equip. Keep your cdjs and save up money for the latter. I would LOVE some cdjs but just simply can't afford them because I spent all my money on production junk. There's no reason to go one way or the other when you can just practice both.

No one NEEDS a midi controller. I've touched my controller less than 10 times since I bought it thinking it was something that I MUST have in order to produce. WRONG. Just plain wrong. MIDI controllers do the same thing your mouse does only it's easier in real time. I can see having it to experiment with melodies before you lay your final one down and for humanizing automation, but in the end I'm pretty sure most quality producers that use controllers go in and clean all this up with their mouse anyway.

What he said... Don't get influenced by gearfreaks. I just bought a virus kb and hardly touched it, still very hooked on my lovely vsti's and mouse

What you DO need are monitors, a decent pc and to some degree a good soundcard. That's the basics, the rest is luxury and for later...           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

i don't think it is luxury if your aim is professional production...

Yeah, and it isnt luxury.. What are u gona listen if u dont have keyboard to input the notes? And once u start creating your own sounds u will see how it is neccesary to have midi controler.. Theres lots of cheap ones so its not some luxury.. Monitors are must but good speakers and headphones will also do for start..
Anyways if u gona spare on the midi and do it with your mouse only, watch carefully about ergonomy of your hand or u could end up in serious troubles with your wrist (personal experiance)..
Dont sell dj equipment.. It will do you good when u need some break from production and some inspiration/influence..           http://www.myspace.com/djacidkills

Gee, I don't know.. maybe when you get to the point of making your own patches you should have enough knowledge to be able to put a MIDI pattern down BEFORE hand and not have to dick around on a MIDI controller..

Very true about the wrist problems. There are many resources on the internet dealing with proper ergonomics.
