Hey whats guys,
Gotta make a decision here not sure which on to go with....
So I wanna get the Vestax VCI-100 controller but I don't know whether the MK1 or the MK2.
The MK2 has a build in sound card and that is the area on which im debating.
Nobody knows what kind of sound card it is so I have no idea what converters they use and what it's made of.
Alternatively I have a spare Motu 828MK2 soundcard that I can use so I can just get the MK1 + motu as sounds card.
The advantage of MK2 is that it's all in one, lighter and has more features.
The disadvantage is that the sound card is built in (USB... yuiks) and it becomes pricey.
The advantage of MK1 + Motu is that I know I got a rock solid sound card which is totally independent of the controller.
The disadvantage is that I gotta carry two boxes now (cotroller + 2U rack with sound card).
The sounds difference might not be THAT big of an issue which make the MK1 + Motu kind of useless... but I am not sure.
If you got any experience with this lemme know what you think and why smiling smiley
Thanks!

The VCI-100 MK1 is built of metal, the MK2 is plastic. Mk2 has switches for easier 4 deck control.
That Motu 828 looks like a really nice studio sound card, it probably does have better quality than the integrated VCI Mk2. But do you want to be lugging around a big piece of studio gear to gigs?
Realistically though, the MK2 sound is probably "good enough" for most situations. It's certainly going to be a lot better than cheapo toy controllers. The cable carrying the audio (usb vs firewire) makes very little difference except perhaps in ultra high end audiophile setups. |

+1
USB is fine.
I'm DJing with a laptop and 4 usb devices connected to it (interface, 2 controllers, hd) and it works better than the firewire daw that I have.

yea I guess it probably improved nowadays, my impression a couple years old so USB had bad sync issues and some other driver stuff so I always got FW.
There is no way to find out what D/A converters they are using. Not from the initial search anyway, I think it's too fresh of a product, so this info will start popping up on the web slowly.
I also don't get the 24bit 98khz output.... it's such a fucking gimick, if you are playing wave/flac that you ripped from a CD then it's going to be 16bit 44.1Khz in ANY way you convert it. Unless you got the original wave in 24bit then you can really justify that otherwise it add zero benefit to your sound, just overload the CPU on the card.
Anyway, I was also looking at the S4 which looks pretty dam nice so not sure what to make of this, either the Vestax or the S4, the price difference is not small either.

That was the case with USB 1.1, but they fixed it in 2.0.
