I would recommend a condenser rather than a dynamic mic for general purpose use.
The SM58 can be good for micing instruments, drums and vocals, but is not so good if you want a warm jazz sound especially and want to be able to record something like and acoustic guitar and ambient sounds.

Commonly recommended budget mic's for multi purpose use is AKG C1000 and RODE NT1.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

You should ask anoter place. I doubt you will get many good answers here. And what do you mean when you just say that you need a good mic for "recording jazz"? You mean one mic for everything!?

I have a ADK A-51, condenser mic...

i think its a good all-around mic....

in the description it says its good for:
Vocals, Choirs, Acoustic Guitar, Fretted Instruments(Banjo, Mandolin, Dobro, ect) Reeds And Woodwinds....

id suggest you go to your local music store and ask them....

Good luck

AvS has a point.... check some more "Acoustic" Forums they will have more knowledge... if you can be precise about what you need it for...

i just wanted a good all-around mic so it was not such a hard decision....

One word of advice though, never trust someone working selling the stuff....trust my word, I used to be one of them

And AvS is right, this is a bad place to ask for this stuff, I personally haven't used a microphone for years , but I did use the C1000 and NT1 quite a bit, and they are versatile and cheap, but there might be better ones out there now.
If you going to buy more expensive mic, definatly get advice from people who use lots of mic's daily if you can.
If you planning to do serious acoustic recordings you probably want a whole set with various microphones.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

Hello! If you could be more specific it would be alot easier to answer. which instruments are you going to record? Howmuch money can you spend???

But If you have money go for a neuman u87 or any other neuman mic (over kill??)

I dont dont see the piont of buying an dynamic mic (except for bass or kick) when you are going to record acoustical instruments..

How are you going to record the drums?? you need alot more microphones for that at least two overhead....

I really don't like the sound of the AKG C1000. It has a strange presence peak and sounds veiled. For an all round mic, I much prefer the AKG C414.

A nice bargain tube mic would be the SE Electronics Z5600.
