I never did that but I know some people who did do it and claim that it works fine. Others claim that it's buggy, third ones that anything above 3 gb is useless anyway. But they all agree that it's doable. Here you'll find some info about that:

I always though XP-32bit only supports 2GB of Ram maximum.
From Microsoft forums:
Operating systems based on Microsoft® Windows NT® technologies have always provided applications with a flat 32-bit virtual address space that describes 4 gigabytes (GB) of virtual memory. The address space is usually split so that 2 GB of address space is directly accessible to the application and the other 2 GB is only accessible to the Windows executive software.
So your applications only see 2GB anyway. Whats the point of any more.
Especially as a Tiny XP install can use as little as 64MB core. |

Well, what I did on my laptop is, installed on 1 partition Vista fully working on maximum visuals for all internet, dvd and recreation and on another partition Tiny XP v5 for studio and Live, no internet and most of things disabled, only audio work.
Great setup.

XP DOES NOT support 8 GB of RAM. 3 GB is the top limit for XP (can be tweaked for 4 GB) so any difference in tests is most likely to be due to 5 more GB of RAM available under Vista. When we take that into account Vista test is quite unimpressive.

Doesn't apply.
Vista 32bit has the same memory limit as XP32bit, or at least its close.
Only XP64 and vista 64 can adress significantly more memory
Differences are most likely much more because Vista has been designed for multicore processor from the ground up, whereas XP isn't.

Well for me Vista is not an option, since M-Audio still haven't developed a driver for my soundcard...

judging from other tests I've seen Vista runs slower than XP even with Cubase 4. In fact Cubase 3 runs better than 4 both on XP and Vista. So for the time being Vista is a downhill path for DAW engines regardless of multi-core, ram and 64 bit processing.

In tests done on the Ableton forums it seems pretty conclusive that you get better performance out of vista.
When a new major version of windows comes out there is always two things that seems to happen:
1) People complaining about how bloated and slow the new version is
2) A noticeable performance boost.
I guess it's due to things like early drivers for some hardware not being 100% ready and that some people don't know how to turn off the bloat.
I'm not touching visa until (or if) I get really stable drivers for my Scope card...I'm not expecting it to make a big difference and I'm in no way eager to spend time dealing with issues to be an early adopter.

it's all fine and I mostly agree with you... but few things are to keep in mind:
1. switch to Vista requires hardware upgrades unless you have a relatively new PC. Better hardware would boost XP performance as well but it's a widespread custom to invest in hardware in order to run new OS. When done in that manner it's hard to judge what exactly boosted performance. Compatibility of OS with hardware, new hardware it self or is it really the OS. Most likely it's a combination.
2. switch from 32 to 64bit should DOUBLE the efficiency of RAM and processing power. Non of the tests go even near double performance.
3. how much will you really benefit from 10 to 15% increase in computing power, is the price and effort worth it, and last but not the least - if current OS is stable and provides a good work flow it's close to insane to risk that for 10 or 15% of boost and possibly have less stable DAW and less money in your pocket. One freeze of DAW can cause more than 15% of decrease in amount of work on the end of the day. Developing paranoia that goes along is also something that I don't need.
In the end we'll all have to switch to Vista or consider a Mac OS. Soon there will be new applications that will not support XP and in that way software and hardware reinforce each other. We've seen it with Win 3.11, Win 95 and Win 98. XP will be no exception. They always win - we always loose. But 2 or 3 years from now you'll have to upgrade your PC one way or the other. By than it will be cheap and stable OS and expected investment in hardware. At this time it's far from safe, it's quite expensive, and beside "cool new look" there's hardly any benefit worth even thinking about it.

Keep in mind that the Cubase 4.1 update will be out in a couple weeks which will support 64 bit Vista....
