Mystical Sun is an adventure into new sound worlds, the world of the atmostronica sound. The music is lush deep and serene at any tempo as the music dilates time. The attention to detail and subtleties in every song will reveal new aural treats with each listen.

Mystical Sun is a human hyper-dimensional radio-interface that tunes into the sound of the universe and records it on a G5. When you hear the lovely female voice on some tracks you are listening to the voice of Dawn.

This CD has been a very pleasant surprise for me, When I got the CD I faintly remembered hearing the name "Mystical Sun" even though he has a bag full of releases on top chillout labels like Interchill, Waveform and Ultimae (Fahrenheit 1,2,3), and an album called "Primordial Atmosphere" released way back in 1994.

Like most of the solo albums "Deeperworlds" released by "Cyberset Music", a young and dynamic label from San Fransisco, is a collection of a few previously released tracks and many fresh new tunes by Richard. What really got my attention is the variety of sounds in this release, Richard manages to take the listeners on a subtle journey through ambient, dub, abstract visions and even upbeat progressive grooves all suspended in a aqueous transmission.

The first 4 track glide through organic and mystical dubby textures along with very serene and mild psychedelic beats that would work marvels on the chillout floors. After nearly 30 minutes of chilled dubby vibes we are pleasantly greeted by "Cloudbursting", an upbeat trancey track with a very live instrumentation feel especially with the guitar strums, flat bassline and a pinch of tribal chants. Track 6 and 7 takes us into a darker and pagan journey with a platter of some instrument that sounds like an oriental flute to me. "Ninth Sphere" puts the listener back into the chilled groove with its mellow mood. Calling for a 360 degree turn track 9 "Innerworld" explores into an array of deep hypnotic 4X4 beats with tribal percussions and female vocal bits, a decent track but not really a standout as compared to the other 4X4 tracks or maybe its the vocals that sound a little cheesy to me. Track 10 brings back the epic ethnic sitar laden dubby vibe. The last four tracks of the album indicate its time to really chillout into ambient atmospheres, taking the listener on a more abstract ambient trip with some colourful and "Staring into the Abyss" moments.

Final verdict, well this is a very good release in terms of variety of psychedelic sounds as mentioned earlier but I think the tracks could have been arranged in a better flow especially in the mid section. Another point worth mentioning would be the small sounds throughout that don’t really grab any attention at first but upon repeated listening they become more evident. Ill definitely be checking more of Cyberset releases.

Hello,

This is Richard of Mystical Sun. Nice to meet you. Here is some information about the album. Sorry for the delay...

“Deeperworlds” the new release from Mystical Sun is an expansive cinematic travelogue through a constellation of sound worlds, each filled with unique sonic forms.  They are bound together by the common themes of vastness, transcendence, exploration, initiation, feeling and returning to the source of all vibrations.

The songs on "Deeperworlds" grew and evolved into distinct styles and expressions over a period of about a decade. The result is a unique document of influences from life and electronic music evolution during that period.

"I see 'Deeperworlds' as composed of scenes from lost forests, black holes, ethereal dream space, ancient epochs and other worlds." - Richard (Mystical Sun)

Upon our arrival "2012" announces the album with its expansive subsonic kick and journeys into an ethereal labyrinth of synthesis.  Followed by "Blue Magnetic Ocean" - a symphonic hologram of flowing aquatic environments.  "Halo" arrives at night with profound altitude and sublime depth.  Just as you drift and begin to dissolve, a voice and a massive groove guide you to "Pure."  Digidelic guitars return in "Cloudbursting," backed by a progressive bass rhythm as the firmament.  We return to Earth with "7 Generations" evoking indigenous traditions, closely followed by "Ceremony" where the path leads to initiation. A venture to the "Ninth Sphere" transports us to a chilled hypnotic ambience. Then a feminine deity beckons us to travel with the Sun to be rebirthed in "Innerworld," while we transverse the Abyss.  Bringing the energy down slowly into the void "In Between Orbits" vibrates with a delicious dubby sitar groove. Having returned from the source, "Dragonfly" flutters past with the organic simplicity of nature. As the phase shifts, we float into the tranquility of "River Goddess."  The elemental power of water is conveyed through serpentine vocals in "Waters of Life" and richly textured liquid tones. Upon departure there is "Antediluvian" - a time to remember and reflect upon all.

Mystical Sun is an artist who creates cinematic sound worlds. He uses a wide array of audio sources in his productions and builds his own custom software instruments to explore the frontiers of sound design.  The sound of Mystical Sun could be described as a deep and mystic tone emanating from a radio transmitter in a parallel dimension. Minimally expressed with a potent essence, Dawn is the vocals of Mystical Sun; leading one to their spirit's calling.

STYLE
Chilled instrumental electronica with rich layering and serene atmospheres. The label describes Mystical Sun's sound as 'atmostronica' highlighting the lush, ambient quality of the music. Beats range from downtempo restfulness through minimal interludes to pacey dance beats - yet the overall impression is one of tranquillity and unhurried easiness. A female voice echoes in some tracks - spoken words bringing a human touch to a generally synthetic canvas - that said, Mystical Sun's sound is by no means sterile or overly sanitised, the melodic structures have a lot of feeling and emotional impact.

MOOD
There is a slightly psychedelic tone to Deeperworlds, however, the sound is perhaps somewhat deeper, the pace more chilled and the colours more saturated than most psychedelic downtempo trance. Mystical Sun leans in the direction of cinematic soundscaping, world influences tinting the sound with a colourful exotica at times - yet always with tasteful subtlety, there aren't frequent global samples or chants as are often used, rather the flavours are invoked by musical structures or by choice of synthetic voices along with some world beats threaded into the programming..

ARTWORK
I have only a promotional package with no artwork and so can only draw attention to the front cover image shown above. The dense hues, translucent above a black infinity match the musical content well.

OVERALL
This is the second full length release from Mystical Sun, coming in the wake of a huge number of compilation appearances. The music arises from the capable hands of California based Richard Mystic and is released in this instance via Cyberset Records. Promotional material claims that "Mystical Sun is a human hyper-dimensional radio interface that tunes into the sound of the universe and records it on a G5" and that "He uses a wide array of audio sources in his productions and builds his own custom software instruments to explore the frontiers of sound design".

WHO WILL LIKE THIS ALBUM
Mystical Sun will appeal to the downtempo fans that have taken the term 'ambient' and adapted it to their own purposes - lovers of deep electronic sequencing and texturing with plenty of rhythm.
