THats the crazy thing. Mp3 compression should only be applied once at the end of the chain. So Myspace fucks that all up by only letting you upload a mp3 only to convert it again. Crazy!!!

I found a player you can host on Myspace "Soundcloud". Its not bad and lets you upload WAVs and then converts 196kbps.

The other trick is to lower the level of you finished song. Avoid normalization. Apparently at low bit rates mp3 compression will distort the song by clipping it.

This paper talks about it.

"What formats can I upload?

SoundCloud supports Mp3’s in any bitrate, 16 bit, 24 bit & 32 bit wav/aiff files in just about any samplerate, Flac, Ogg and more.

Does SoundCloud apply bit-rate compression when I upload tracks ?

In order for users to hear music rapidly on the SC platform, we re-encode every track to high quality 128 kbps Mp3s. However, if you make your file « downloadable », then the users who have access to it will be able to download the original file (whether it’s Aiff, Wav or Mp3)."

Taken from the site. sorrys its 128kbps but at least only one pass of encoding. Does sound much better than myspace

yeah, just delete you tracks, then the player disappears.

i checked out "soundcloud" now.

simply sign, you can upload 5 tracks per month (wavs)... in the player they get compressed to 128...
can listen/see here http://www.myspace.com/roblabra
but you can still hear some artefacts of the mp3 convertion...
also cool is that you can see the audio peaks in the player...
and NO BUGS with timing... like with the myspaceplayer.
its just a littlebit tricky to get the player to myspace.

thanks for the link...
cheers
