it makes a BIG difference especially if you install the oparating system on the fast SATA drive with 16 mb buffer. unfortuneatelly not every "top performance" drive can work with G5 internal SATA controller. for example Western Digital Raptor drive (it's 10k drive speed, extreme performance!) doesn't work with internal SATA controllers. it hangs up the system. the soulution is simple, you need to install PCI-X SATA controller and connect the drive(s) to it internally. i have tested some options and FirmTek SeriTek/1VE2+2 it's my recommendation. it's a bootable card so you can install the Mac OSX on every drive connected to this card. this controller can work with 2 internal and 2 external drives. it's great solution and not expensive. it gives you a possibility to use WD Raptor drives inside/or outside the computer. i would be carefull with external SATA enclosures because of their compatibility, especially SATA/eSATA compatibility. i use WIEBETCH, ToughTech eSATA enclosure (WD740GD inside) + Express34 eSATA card with my Mac Book Pro. it's HUGE difference, the read/write tests are 3 times faster then Mac Book internal drive. recommended!
unfortunatelly FirmTek SeriTek/1VE2+2 controller doesn't work with Wiebetech ToughTech eSATA enclosure, it's not comaptibile. i work on it!:)
