Hi guys, as Christmas is almost there and I don't have many presents to buy (hurray for small families!), I thought I'd make myself a present in the form of a nice upgrade to my home-studio.

I'll switch my Prodipe Pro 8 for a pair of Yamaha HS80M, my Axiom 49 (keyboard) for a Novation 37 SL (the limited edition, even if I'm not sure having something so flashy is a good thing in the long run) and also buy a Firepod (thanks to the guys from the soundcard thread!).

Does this upgrade seems a good idea to you (ie cost efficient? If you think I could get better bang for my bucks or that the difference between the old stuff and the new one is too little to make it worthy, would you give me some advices on how to improve this ?

Thanks for your help

Well I just sold my Axiom 49 to get a 37 SL, and It was definitely worth it, but the monitors aren't much of an upgrade imo. It sounds like you have all the basics down already, so if I was in your situation I would go for one high end piece of gear instead of making small upgrades on everything. If you already have a sound card, I suggest getting some really nice monitors.

          You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

I have found the ReMote SL to be a complete waste of time and money. This is only my opinion though. Lot's of people seem to like it.

If you're doing live gigs then I suspect all the knobs and faders might be more useful.

I haven't installed Automap in over a year because I just couldn't be bothered with it, good idea, rubbish implementation - in the end, I'm just quicker round a software synth with a mouse.

I might put it up for sale soon and just buy a cheapie midi keyboard. I use my Yamaha piano with midi out for most of my composing anyway.

I agree with Kane about the monitors. Get the best slowly, don't go for regrettable small upgrades, its a waste of money in the long run.

I have those same Yamahas. I can't speak on behalf of what you're replacing them with, but I am happy with them so far. There is a slight hiss though when no sound is being generated. I've pretty much zoned it out already so it's no big deal to me.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

@ Tomos:

I hear you man, the Remote SL is utter rubbish.

Its one of those ideas that seem good on paper but isn't even close when you put it to practice, and I'm kinda surprised that Novation themselves didn't realize this somewhere along the way. Or maybe it was just too sweet a marketing opportunity to miss... either way I'd never recommend it to anyone.

Good luck selling it - I recently spoke to my local music dealer, and they almost always buy stuff back for a decent price and resell it, but the Remote SL they said, had been such a hard sell that they wouldn't give me a dime for it because it'll just end up gathering dust on the shelves.. hehe..

Damn, now I'm confused...

Oh well, I found a nice deal for the SL, so I guess I can afford to try it to see if it suits my taste.

Actually, I found out that I've more money to put in this upgrade than expected (thanks to the actual exchange rate of the GBP), I guess I'll go for something better than the HS80 (and if possible some 6' monitors, 8' are a bit too big for my use).

Thanks for your feedback

But Ableton midi learn is just 'click, twist' ?

ie. Click element on screen, turn pot = assigned.

No need for automap, surely?

As I said, possibly useful for gigs, but in the studio it ain't much better than any other midi controller.

I already got a little phatty and I had a Kaossilator (sold it, the possibilities were too limited to my taste. Still, my gf nearly killed me when I told her that I didn't have it anymore, so I guess it goes down to personal taste ).

Actually, the things I previously mentionned are basically the only things I think I should update in my home studio (maybe I'll add a polyevolver or a nord synth when I'll be rich!), that's why I'd like to buy stuff that'll be good enough to last for at least 2 years.

I understood that there's a risk the novation won't suit my workflow, but this I can easily sell if that's the case.

The only thing I'm still a bit worried about is that the HS80 are too low-grade and that I risk to feel that I need to change for something better in 6 months. If that's the case, I'd rather put some more money now and get something better right from the start !

indeed , search for some Dynaudio or Adam second hand in the best price you can find them (and condition of course ) and go there, it will be huge difference and you will mix on them with much pleasure without needing to replace for long time

Adam A7 always tempted me, but the lack of bass presence was the thing that kept me from buying them... Would adding a sub be a good solution the make up for this little issue ?
