Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (funniest book ever, brilliant word games and off-hand and extremely observant of human nature)
Edgar Allen Poe - Tales of Edgar Allen Poe (just for the brilliant use of the English language, the richness of descriptions... a combination of masterpieces)
Franz Kafka - The Prison Colony (sick, twisted and riveting - even more so than the average Kafka story)
Joseph Heller - Catch 22 (best army story ever, and funny as hell, but with a deep insight to the human core of the experience)
George Orwell - 1984 (catharsis)
Joseph Conrad - Heart of Darkness (the story on which Apocalypse Now was based)
Jhonen Vasquez - Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (yes, a comic book series. The best one ever though)
Oscar Wilde - The Picture of Dorian Gray (genius, both literary and philosophically)
I believe these are basically the greatest things ever written http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222 |

All of the books here are masterpieces IMO, but very different from one another. I mean, Douglas Adams, Franz Kafka and Jhonen Vasquez really can't be compared... they're too different.
I suppose that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Catch 22 and 1984 are the most popular of these. That's a good place to start as any. |
