I don't really have the latest in speaker systems for studio monitoring. but these speakers were given to me by my father who had these for a long time. He claimed these are audio "monitors", I think the sound is decent.

I'm not sure what brand these speakers really are. on the back it says "Model 500" and the front covers (which i took off) had a label called "Acoustics". These are powered by a pre-amp called "Optimus SA-155", which has knobs for different output channels (tuner, cd/tape, phono), Balance, Tone, and volume.

The Speakers "model 500", have a label on the back boasting nice sound, but no specs. In terms of sound, it seems alright, some of my friends say it is loud and big, bass is decent and the mids and highs are good. I think it sounds alright and i've been using them for my music production. I don't have the budget for high end monitors at the moment, so i get by with these.

what do you think? Has anyone seen these or know anything about them?

I've googled everywhere about these, but nothing relevant turned up.

The speakers I think were made for acoustic audio and the Amp...wow...it was made in like the 60's. You need to at least go get a new amp of some sort that has new tech in it. It will make the monitors sound much better.
I mean you could get an old amp/receiver and it would be a lot better.
Like I said the monitors I beleive were not ment for clean digital sounds they were made for monitoring acoustic instruments. No good for studio work in electronic music, You wont hear everything acuratly.
They are fine for just listening to tunes but not ideal for production of new clean digital music.
There is a pretty big market for antiqe audio gear though so you might be able to sell the monitors for a good price if you wanted.

I have these ( http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/StudiophileBX5a.html ) very cheep and not the best by far but they do ok for me for now.

The best size of the driver/speaker depends on your room size. Bigger room bigger speakers needed to fill those frequencies in the space...basicly.           \\\"Invoking the inner dancing buddha with future frequencies from beyond\\\" ~GyPsy

Ah I see, yeah the speakers are mint condition and I did get the impression the amp is old tech, 60s? not sure about that, it was sold at radioshack back in late 80s. So far i just produce my music on this and when i get down to tweaking the sound and fine-tuning I switch to my Sennheiser headphones. as for studio set up, it's pretty ghetto, it's all on a desk in a townhouse basement. the basement is carpeted and the walls are covered in hardwood covering with insulation on the inside. yeah it's not the best set up, but I get by with it for now. I thought about selling them online, though not sure who would really want these.

what do you recommend for budget monitors, say under 300?

I recommend Edirol MA-20D
Cheap and flat, in my opinion, very nice to mix with if you get used to its sound

I'd recommend you to save some more money and buy s.th. like at least adam a7(x) or dynaudio bm5a. Anything below you might regret.

Look for your self:

Amplifiers/Receivers
Realistic SA-155 Mini Stereo Amplifier 310-1957
Optimus TM-155 AM/FM Stereo Mini-Tuner 310-1958

Dont listen to Eleusene, you can get lots of decent monitors for learning on you dont need to buy the expensive monitors right off learn your trade first then get the expensive tools. Unless money is no matter in that case yes get the big boy toys and have fun.
