Recently i have had some ideas on mixing a track. Please comment an say if im on the right track. The dominant instrument in the track should be the kick. Make sure it´s clearly heard with the use of eq.
Now every other instrument should be a compliment to the kick. When you set the level of an instrument make sure it doesn´t steal focus from the kick.
I highpassed my kick and bass but the song was still heavy on my speakers so i highpassed the main output aswell.
Thankful for further ideas on mixing a track.

Most conclusions here are correct. High pass filters have their ups and downs though, don't make anything automaticly, just because you've grown into the habit of doing it - just base such decisions on what the track/mix needs.

To heavy a mix could mean a lot of things, among them that the frequency balance is off. Could be that it's to bass heavy, the lower end can eat a lot of headroom and make the speakers struggle to reproduce the sound and that affects all the frenquencies; other times it's just that the ballance is off. cheers

Well yes, about priorities of instruments I see something like this:

1.-Kick, bass, main percussion. (Beat, drums)
2.-Lead sounds.
3.-Everything else.

But man there are LOTS of tutorials on the internet about this. Also remember there are different techniques and you could create your own aswell!

Yes, to me personally, the main instrument is the bass, and then the kick, but they work together so I focus on those 2, and then mix everything like you said, with eq, trying not to interfere with the the low frequencies, that are the most important in my mix, I guess if you are doing, other style of music, like rock or pop, you will focus in the vocals that are the most important "instruments" in the track. For example, I don't high pass the kick or the bass! I know producers that do highpass bass and kick, but I know other producers that don't do it! I personally don like it that much! and I don't know what you mean by the main output, but if you mean the master channel, I don't really do anything to it ether, I just always put a spectral analyzer in the inserts, and that's pretty much what I do! And like midnight sun said, there are many techniques the best is to explore with different techniques, that way you can always evolve in your mix, and as a producer! and like frisbeehead said, first use your ears, don't do anything in automatic, sometimes your sound will need a high pass but no every time necessarily, always try to listen first and then fix the problem, but sometimes your synthesis will be perfect and excess eq, could just en up dirtying your mix! that's my humble opinion have a good day!!

Kick and bass are the most important parts because they are perceived by the human ear as less loud! then comes percussion, leads, fx etcetera...

Interestingly enough, lately I find myself equing less and less and choosing sound elements for my tracks that just sound good... just write it and if it sounds good, that's it!... it's funny that...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:
