It has been my favorite percussion instrument since i first discovered it. I'm a musician, particularly the jack-of-all-trades type of musician, however i'm quite intimidated by this one. I always knew that it was different than any other drum, and now having one to play around on, i see how different it is.

A question to anyone out there who plays, do you think its possible to learn how to make it sound alright via web sites? or is this the kind of thing that takes years of daily training to make sound basic?...

its years of training for any musical instrument....not only tabla.

if you have good sense of rythm and good ears......you will learn the basics in few weeks\months.

listen a lot to indian music.......and try to copy the rythm
also check tabla videos on youtube           www.myspace.com/aliasix

IMO watching videos won't help much, coz you need eyes of falcon to make out whats going on in the video with Tabla, as it's too quick......

You just need to practice, listen to Ustad Zakir Husain's stuff & try to create those sounds.....

I play a bit of Tabla, but just out of practice now, you need to hit the right areas of Tabla with the right areas of your fingers & palms.           We were born naked & grow up to become wicked.
