i was offered the virus a for 900 shekels, is it worth it?
while im at it, if i purchase a dsp sound card, is it accesible from any sequencer?
thanks

900 nis for virus A is a great prise take it even without use you will sell it in more money if you won't need it in which i'm not sure.........
i sold mine in 2000nis and guy run after me to buy it first ......
Virus A or other good synthesizer won't make your studio less intresting ... comon go for it ////.....
do not think to buy DSP sound card ...... coz from ppl who use it (Pulsar , Luna ) i got an idea that they do not know shit about card and use only 10%-20% of it .....
go for sound card like Delta series and if you need DSP buy then DSP card with quality FX....
i don't trust x in 1 machines coz if one part broken other the same ......
Virus A is fully accesible from any sequencer that support in/out midi exchange .....

thank you sektor, cosnider it done.
as for the dsp, im thinking of the emu 1820m which i understand is quite reliable.
i dont know much at all about sound crads, i understand that dsp will run effects off the card instead of on the cpu, which should dramatically increase the performance of my computer, and that is what i want.
what i dotn understand is how do i acess dsp effects. are they like DX and vst effects or are they specific to certain sequencers?
thanks

very good sound advice Sektor!!!!
no jk
and how much have you used it...."from the ppl you heard"....hmmm
I would say definatly go for a DSP card... direct high resolution digital connection, cheap, more flexible and less space consuming.
Pulsar tend to have the fattest synths.
I don't know much about the EMU, but on the pulsar you can get them up as any vst plug in an insert using XTC mode...never used that myself though since you loose a lot of flexiblity.

it was not sound advice but life expirience .....
not everyone can learn such things and vaerity much better than limited synths
think about prise of Pulsar and how much VSTi can you buy on this money ....
nothing connected to sound ..... from sound point i don't know so i will wait till Zildoggo respond here on subject ..... |

the emu has 2 ways of applying effects,.
one is in the mixer application for the card.,
here you have virtual channels for your physical inputs, asio inputs (the outputs of asio apps) and digital inputs.,
you can put insert effects on these channels.,
and there is a vst thing that alows you to route your sequencers channels through the dsp effects.,
i think pulsar/scope alows you to do the same thing.,
but the more expensive creamware models alow for even more flexibility.,
about quality of sound of pulsar, i dont know because i never had one.,
ooh., and remember with the emu that you can only use effects when you work in 44.1khz or 48khz,.!!!
anyway.,
talolard,
you shoul go to the manufacturers sites and READ FOR YOURSELF what the products offer .,
greets.,

I think buying a Virus or a DSP card are both good options, it depends on your needs i guess. Not buying a DSP card and spending the money on more VSTi's does not sound like a good option; imho it's better to have a few really good pieces of gear you know very well then loads of plugins you only know superficially. 900 nis for a Virus is indeed a bargain, i would check the thing carefully though: do all the knobs work properly, are the audio-outputs okay, does it look like it's been treated with respect ? Anywayz; happy shopping ;-) |
