Bit of background quickly. For the last year or so I've been DJing at a Goth/Industrial club. Not because of my skill, but because I'm friends with the owners and have a wide knowlege of music...So I was basically just doing half the job of a DJ and simply reading the crowd and selecting the right songs, so while I could always get a dancefloor going, I never mixed properly and only attempted beat mixing very sporadically, simply because I'd never been taught how, I just kind of got put behind decks.
I've really started wanting to get into Psytrance DJing now, and a friend and I are going to start practicing properly together.
I've been wanting to practice EQ mixing for awhile, but haven't really had any times to practice with hardware. I just got the demo of Traktor and decided to record a mix between a Darkwave track and a Industrial Metal track. Diary Of Dreams vs Psyclon Nine - Chemicals. So this is more a four minute remix of sorts rather than a DJ-style transition.
How does it sound? I tried to pay attention to phrasing but not so much harmonics, yet I kind of like the way the tones of the two tracks.
I mixed the Psyclon Nine guitars with the DoD chorus at 2:30, I also like the way the P9 violins come through at 1:47 before the next DoD phrase.
It's obviously not flawless seeing as I've just gotten into EQ mixing, but I try patch up my mistakes quickly, but that's a bit tough working EQ dials with a mouse .
I know what parts I'd like to work on. (Like taking out the mids of the Diary Of Dreams track at around 3:28 when the P9 chrous comes in.)
I like it though. I think it sounds almsot like another song. Anyone got any tips to give me?
My soundcard only has one output, so sound quality isn't the greatest, sorry bout that.
