A question:
If, like me, you play no musical instruments, and are interested in writing music, is there any one instrument above all others that would be the most beneficial to learn?

surely the piano, get smith to teach you
erm you need to know about chords and stuff right? so that'll teach you not to make things clash too hideously, but to be honest i don't really know.. maybe the triangle to work a sense of rythm...

if u don't know how to play, but yu have a "musical ear" - try really piano with a teacher or tutorial with supervision of somebody who knows.
there's www.pianonanny.com - maybe you'll find this usefull.
in the worser case - if u don't have musical hearing, but have a sense of rythm, u can try to learn drums, and after u get the point of it - try to learn the musical grammatix and choose some harmony, to which u will stick.
if u don't have neither ears nor rythm ... u can try learn singing or playing anything, and pray one day it will develop: sometimes in the young age people don't have it, and then later on - it suddenly apears
just don't think it will come to u by itself - no pain no gain.
good luck.
