"What does a stone sound like?"
A film portrait of Melodyne inventor Peter Neubäcker

The man primarily behind such Celemony innovations as Melodyne, DNA Direct Note Access and Capstan is Peter Neubäcker -- a passionate musician, researcher and inventor, who sets unusual goals for himself and manages even on occasion to realize in practice things that in theory can't be achieved. It was the question "What does a stone sound like?" that led Peter Neubäcker to the invention of Melodyne around 15 years ago.

In this interview with Maximilian Schönherr, he airs some of the secrets of Melodyne and offers insights into his thoughts and personal history. He talks about his passion for philosophy, music and mathematics as well as how guitar-making, Johannes Kepler and the science of Harmonics have influenced him. From the conversation, a fascinating 30-minute film portrait has emerged that not only shows one of the most resourceful and multi-facetted personalities in the audio industry but also the background to Celemony innovations.

There is one particular reason why I proposed this for a discussion and it is the concept behind Melodyne called local sound synthesis and the practical implication of this model for producers. Local sound synthesis treats sound as independent of pitch, timbre and time. Sounds turns to a continuum of a shape form, which can be changed, timestretched und treated arbitrary the way you want. This method makes it possible to generate new sound from given recordings in real time very efficiently in CPU terms, keeping the sound clean and non destructive which is probably one of the most difficult things to achieve as a producer too.

You can read more at http://www.resolutionmag.com/pdfs/MAKER/PETERN~1.PDF

Except the more decent and old fashioned approach to music theory there is a different way to understand a sound wave as well. But the question that would be more relevant to producers is, how useful is this for you ? What practical impact does the model of synthesis in your software have and do you care about it?

I love the melodyne software, specially when moving away from the normal autotune like operation. Its been nice to create some really dissonant and original chords and harmonies with this stuff . Really an ear opener.           www.soundcloud.com/elektroakustica/sets/downtempo/

I wish I knew about the inventor of melodyne some years ago when we had those long discussions about the frequencies of the planets and about what connects mathematics, music theory and astrology. Then I would just have asked what do you guys think about the fact that melodyne inventor Neubäcker used to be a professional astrologer before he began to write software code lines for melodyne. I find this highly intriguing. Watch the video, it is useful to know this background , even if you believe you already know too well what melodyne does in terms of music production.
