Go in the search of chaos to find yourself and you'll end up finding structure.
Try analyzing your favorite tunes. What sub-genre of psytrance are you talking about? They are mostly different from each other.

i lerned from copying a track into the daw and studying it, iv also found that if you send a while making lots of diffrent leads, stabs and fx that all sound good layered together first, before i make any structure, then when i have lots of intresting ideas, i then start putting abit of structure together and you can just add new sounds from what you have made and start building a track, but its not that easy as you need variation, and you dont want a track to sound like you have just pasted a load of sounds down, so i then go through from the start adding builds, fx and automation and one shot sounds till the first bit sounds like it flows nicely and has energy building up, then move on to the next bit, making sure it all sounds good and keeps the energy too.
i think there is more than one way to make song structure, but thats how i do it. |

I use ableton live and i collect and making sounds i don't put it in my draw yet ! if i got my sounds ready and happy with it i record it live and all my midi are then in my draw , then i have a vieuw how its can be ! and sometimes i hustle around for combinations !
i work then on my intro and have control about build up and so on ! like you said it has to come natural ,but that takes time ! good luck brother |

Try to learn the formula for the style you are making, normally a song is composed, with different parts, The intro, then the introduction of some sounds, and the harmony for the track, then you start giving the personality of the track, then you got the big break, like around the middle of your track, thats going to be theme of your song, after that you can have a another break, and then you returned with the last part of the history, the big finale, trying to introduce some things from the beginning so it sounds part of the same track, and you close the circle of your composition
If you learn the formula and every part of the song, its going to be easier to write every part more easily. Try to always use new tricks or sounds in every song, try to tweak your sounds more, experiment with leads and sounds that you not normally use in a track, and try to incorporate them to your track. All those thing can help you get more ideas when you have no idea what to do next! but the best thing to do, is just sit in front of your synth and experiment with the sound! there are not limits of what you can do in music production! just mess around in the studio! |

A thick solid concret bass encasing a metallic like pseudo skeletal structure works as a start, from there a light flesh like pad revolving around said skeletal structure works with the life force of a good lead over the the beating heart and a binary intelligent layer of static sound for the brain. Once this has all been built and well integrated the eyes will open to allow a grand finale that will make a billion hippies transcend and ejaculate their bad egos in unions to form a greater society will occur.

i learned that with my ears, listning every day, alot of Goa Trance, than, praticing new tracks i started to perceive how was sounding my structure, what sounded good and bad...if u know ur style well, ur ears will know the time of everthing.
Me and others artists, just by hearing, can build a whole scale of notes just by listening alot of tracks of the style, i mean, a scale that other artists uses.
I was going to do a collab with a friend, and i told him to use Phryigian.....other day he came with the melodies samples, i asked, u used the scale? he said no, he did by hearing.....when i was putting the notes he used on piano roll, it was phryigian and he didnt knew that....

I definitely think taking the time to deconstruct your fav track either visually in a DAW etc. or by repeated listening helps.
Not every EDM track is for the dancefloor, I have often achieved much more pleasure at home with good 'phones on than on the floor with poor acoustics.
Writing music just for peak dancefloor moments is what's killing the music nowadays. Nothing new or original. Big bass & no soul IMHO.

i'm not sure i agree here. it's not really either this or that. there's certainly a lot of uninspired music with "big bass & no soul", but a lot of that is not even very dancable. endless buildups upon buildups and "put your hands up in the air" moments aren't something i can dance to. still if you look back 10 or 15 years there were plenty of tracks that were great on the dancefloor as well as great for zoning out at home with 'phones. (of course there's still psytrance that can do this nowadays, but back then these tracks were also the most popular). |
