Hi all,
since I started producing my music listening pleasure has seriously deteriorated, its kinda alarming actually. I analyze everything I hear, and the more I know about music production or the better i get at it the more I analyze. At first I just analyzed what track is doing what , now i listen to compression, EQ or whatever, or picking out chord progressions...anyways, its very hard to just enjoy music anymore. And my music taste has changed because of this as well, i actually enjoy boring but well-produced music because i want to hear how they get to that polished sound, and dislike inspired but less well-produced music...
I am interested what some of you really experienced producers have to say about this, like EP (Kris) for example. Does this ever go away, or does it get even worse? Can you still just sit down and enjoy music, can you switch the analyzer in your head off?
I hope this is just a phase every n00b goes through and then eventually i can go back to listening like i used to...

Just hear something new...
There are literaly tons of different musical styles, pick one that you enjoy and don't analyze.
For me it was jazz and blues, right now listening to T Boone Walker, good stuff right there.
From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)

its getting worse filter on, off compressor on..sidechain here and there ..hehe
especially that basic filter sound i was so amazed by when i heard it first times..was one of my favourite..now its just well , a filter..hehe
but still im very impressed by some peoples skills if i listen to tracks that are just pefect to my ears, sounds wise and musically..so one good thing about it is , there is always room to improve yourself skills and you start listening carefully and wonder how this or that can be done..then if you find out its even more a pleasure..

It happens to me too but after a while I learned to turn on / off my inner analyser so sometimes I just enjoy listening / dancing to the music although sometimes if something surprises me I might take a quick pick.
It can get obsessive so take care on that, music is fun after all and I think thoughts should be aimed to making and enjoying good music rather than technically perfect super compressed eq sounds.
I find the use of drugs particularly interesting in this mater because if one gets intoxicated enough can go from analysing every bit to don't giving a fuck and just wanting to dance and trip out!
Also, no mater how much you think you can listen to, it will hardly really help you to guess that limiter's gain reduction or the high shelf eq... some stuff it is really fun to watch tho, like complex percussion, sample work or an interesting melody.
have fun! |

only sounds i cant figure out gives me a real kick.
its bad because after some years of production you know most sounds
after listening (analyzing) a track a few times you should can enjoy it... but the first few listenings you have to...
its like every thing you do a little bit deeper.
for example skateboarding... when you driving through places you just see obstacles, stairs, ledges for the perfect slide/grind/trick, and you cant enjoy the view or some other landmarks.
making movies... you cant enjoy a film like you did before, because you look at every camerasetting, colourcorrection etc...
learn to love it

i can't go to concerts anymore just because of the terrible quality of the PAs and the lack of good sound men.
i always want to push them off the board and take over :/ |

i used to have this this problem for a while, but now it's gone. Maybe because sound quality is not what I care about most when producing...

Ahaha I'm the same, I can't help it. I've developed ways of asking the engineer if he's open to suggestions... only at smaller gigs tho. Surprisingly often they're open to it and quite grateful; I'd imagine they know exactly what it's like!
I've got my first proper gig soon as a live sound engineer on the Arcadia Stage at Glastonbury Festival, for a friend's band; I'm sure I'll get a few people hovering round the FoH desk looking like they want to make some changes! (hopefully not including the rig engineer)

I found that moving away from electronic music helped a lot, I hardly ever listen to psytrance these days. I only listen to it when i'm driving or at a party and I find I enjoy it way more and don't end up just critisising it.
But it will always happen, even when i'm listening to jazz I become amazed at the way a certain sound has been captured or critical about another....
You just got to take it for what it is, take yourself and your ego away from the music and just listen.

same here, and it was pretty short anyway. perhaps that is because, as a long time guitar player, i had learned the skill of turning it on and off a long time ago when picking apart and analysing guitar parts

oh, yes that's a real pain! at just about every smaller party they turn the lows up much too high for the PA, resulting in a "overlimited", muddy mess. |

I think when u found yourself analyzing to much u should try to start feeling the music like what the track makes u feel.. u will short notice how u start really enjoy the music and stop analyze. simple as that. |

Hey GSH, its alleycat from the pie, cool to see you around and good to see you're making choonz now
Id love to tell you that its a n00b thing...
But its not.
But theres a plus side to it, when you finally do hear something that sounds good, its REALLLLLLY good.
But also theres a downside to THAT as well, because, at least for me, I find myself hearing things that I like in crappy music. Ill hear some Top 40 pop crap and think 'wow thats some clean production'
The deeper I get into musicianship and production the more I notice others' mistakes and how many of those get ignored it seems...
I find the best remedy is just to dance, cuz I always have fun, even when its happy hardcore I have fun if I dance to it. As the 5 Assed Monkey said, step back out of your objective analyzing and just... Feel it
