hey fellas...
in fact it can be possible to run Cubase SX under linux... u just need to use VMWare. VmWare is some sort of Virtual Machine inside your hardware. lol (hope you get it) well what it does is simple... you instal the VM under you linux operating system...and vmware let you instal win xp/2000/etc etc inside a partition that it will create.
although i've never tryed it out...
just google it...
but in the end i don't see a point in using cubase in linux. seeing that for cubase u need to instal under linux a complete Virtual Partition..that will take you space...only for windows himself.
if you wanna start working with sequencers in linux...try out rosegarden...altough keep in mind that linux had born from an 'end course project' of a guy called Linus Torvalds...and it's pointed for network/data transmitions.
see it as an almost-clone of the well known AT&T/Bell Labs Unix.
oh and one more thing..... opensource coders rocks!

you can use Vine also
Vine unlike VMware is free, and also, since the version of linux you will be using is most likely x386, it works as an interface between the Linux OS and Windows programs, meaning that you do not need a windows partition and virtual OS running (which will suck alot of your precious CPU)
check it out.

Linux is great for audio... Because u have the JACK server on linux which controls all the connections (like a virtual patch bay), no other operating systems has such a great feature. Also, for rosegarden ou don't need the whole kde interface, just the ISO, and rosegarden can start up (which means that u have 200-300 less Mb to install to run rosegarden). It is a loooooooot of work though, just to get the system up and running... And a lot of research... I'd post loads of links, but i'm not at home, i'll try to remember this evening... Only real problem is that u can't use most of the great hardware (except the most commenly used ones, for those there are already third party drivers, that means, drivers written by people not working for the company, i think there are already drivers for Motu 828's), and that vst's don't run on linux (you do have another plugin format with loads of free plugins, called LADSPA, anyway, everything is free for linux...) |
