Woot, that's a nice book, I'm buying it.

I wonder why I didn't started with books, things just got so much clearer for me a few days ago when I finally purchased a book about Live! and one about synthetisis ("How to Make A Noise", I went for the physical copy as it is just soooo good for a noob like me).

Oh, btw, I have a brand new "Cubase SX/SL 3 Power" book that I ordered by mistake and which I willing to trade for something else, if someone's interested

This one : http://www.amazon.com/Cubase-SX-SL-3-Power/dp/1592005373/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1230227779&sr=1-1

i wouldn't go that far. and i think that would depend more on the reader's level of knowledge and whether the book hits the right spot.

so i'm about 300 pages into it (and, yes, i do spend a lot of time on the john). first of all, whoever was the editor/proofreader for this book should seriously consider doing something else for a living. the number of misspellings and retardedly constructed sentences is insane. since i can't help but notice them, it's kind of distracting.

the book itself is pretty decent, but once again, its usefulness depends on the reader's level. i was already pretty familiar with all the concepts presented in the first half of the book, so there only handful of new things i learned. however, it was still a nice overview and i read everything anyway to cement my existing knowledge or have slightly different way of thinking about the things i already know.

it wasn't until i got to the chapter on compression that i finally got the first big "A-HA" moment. it's the longest chapter of the book (around 65 pages) and he covers some history, inner workings, affect of setting various parameters on the signal, and practical uses. my knowledge of compression was very incomplete until i read this section.

the book has a lot of graphics to illustrate the concepts. so you can read about something. look at the graph to try to picture in your mind what's happening to the sound. and then there's a dvd full of sound samples, so you can hear the applications as well. of course, anybody can do similar stuff themselves. like put a filter on a sound, set the slope to 12db, bounce. then set the slope to 24db, bounce. then play the two back to back to hear what changing the slope does. but it's nice that he already did this for you. plus, the settings match with the illustrations he provides. and he uses a lot of the same samples, so you get used to the samples themselves and can better hear the changes he is trying to demonstrate.

i'll keep reading and post an update once i'm done with it.
