If u really are tonedeaf then u will have problems making melodies, unless u strictly follow the theory, then u can't go wrong... If u have a problem with damaged hearing then u will have to know what the damage does to the sound (example, i know that i hear a little better on the right, so the center of a mix is a little to the right for me...) and react appropriatly (example, because i know that the middle is a little to the right to me i adapt to that... Otherwise i would move everything too much to the left).

if u want to feel music like beethoven did u need to have years and years of experience He knew how everything sounds out of experience, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to make music while being deaf... And he strictly followed the rules, like all classical composers. Then u cant go wrong...

just dont forget , anyone's ears get less and less sensetive as much they are exposed to noise (music also , specialy loud high freqs) , for example , the guy makes sound for live shows for 10 years and is 45 now, prolly hear BAD compare to any 20 years old. he is more trained tho so prolly makes the job better.
there is also the factor of preserving your hearing , with special equipment like pro seal .           www.sattelbattle.com

- to damage your hearing you'd have to be exposed to volumes that your hearing finds unpleasent. Simply don't be a fool and don't turn up the volume more than your ears can take. There's no single benefit from making music on such loud volumes that could damage your hearing.

This is NOT TRUE!
When focused to what he hears a person can tune up hearing and make it more sensitive in a way of expanding frequency range and amplifing low and hi frequency that humans usualy are not focused on.

So one with 25 years of practice as a sound designer can hear up to 300% more than a 20 year old kid with fresh pair of ears.

All about human hearing you can find here:

http://www.avatar.com.au/courses/PPofM/index.html

You hear more and more with every single hour of active listening. Like every other aspect of human body and functions hearing also can be improoved when trained.

To damage your hearing you have to be exposed to volumes you find unpleasent. They are unpleasent because of the fizical actions taken in your ear (tiny bones and muscles in your ear) to compress the overloaded volume in order to save the hearing.

So to save the hearing you simply should not turn up the volume more than your ears can take without side effects (headache etc.). There is no single benefit from making music on such loud volumes anyway.          "It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception"

Most people don't damage they're ears in the studio... We damage them at parties... If the dj-booth is not properly shielded from the noise coming from the dancefloor u have to turn up the volume waaaay too high... It's actually scary to see how high it's turned up, and u still don't hear enough to mix or play live decently... Earplugs don't help unless they are professional (because standard earplugs are good to block high freqs but not for low freqs, so if u use them u only hear rumbling which is not good either.. U need earplugs with a frequency responce that's almost flat over all freqs...). Since most of us don't have such earplugs (or forget them all the time) we get our ears damaged... Never heard anybody say that he damaged his ears at home...
