HI guys~ it's beginning trance addict, again
I have few questions to ask...
can be helpful for anyone out there
1. I was reading through some forums and i saw all these new words, like mixer, scratch, progressive, loops, sequencer, turntable, etc.... and i was curious if there's good website or book of all these dj glossary(what they are, what they do), couldn't find them on internet.
2. I've watched few of tieseto concert videos, and he was only turning some buttons and turntable(?) and just cds...and that seem to be it. nothing else... can anyone tell me what else he's doing and are those all he need for concert? seems like just playing regular music cds....
i mean i have midi keyboard to make tunes..
he doesn't even use that..
3. and what's in the cds? just regular plain music? |

1. Yahoo is (also) your friend....
http://www.sistersf.com/glossary.php
2. Don't watch Tiesto videos not very good education imo
Try searching in Youtube and Myspace for party videos, check the DJs there, and of course - go to parties, stand in the DJ area and check out what he/she's doing.
3. In the CDs you can probably find his music....
not really sure what plain music stands for, but he most likely has single tracks fresh from the studio in there.
  YEEEEES! |

1. This is a bit of a cop out but with these words generally the meanings are known by those who require them. Chances are if you research DJing on the net enough you will come by all the words and definitions eventually, heaven knows we arent born with the entire history of language in our minds. But the words you mentioned are fairly commonplace. In a game of guess the odd one out I would say progressive, as the other phrases you mentioned can be explained as DJ utilities... I think I'm just entertaining myself now.
2. Tiesto, although he has produced artist albums, is first and foremost a DJ, back in the day this is what DJ's did. I think on this site especially you will have people tell you he's not talented as he's more commercially viable but in his game there is none better. Though we do live in an age where the boundaries between DJ and producer are fading more and more every day. The real question is, what do you want to do?
3. The good old fashion dance music DJ plays completed tracks side by side with a syncronised beat. You can get these on I-tunes or at your local record store. A DJ/producer will sometimes be heard playing loops i.e. components of a track... basslines, percussion, melodies... usually syncronised with a sequencer, typically albleton live but in the days before software sequencers were used in conjunction with synth modules, drum machines and so forth.
Don't expect to see a DJ juggling knives while dancing on a lions back. A DJ is not a musician... that said, neither is a builder, but it does not mean he is still not the master at his trade.
4. Why post questions about tiesto on a psy trance forum? |

2. well... i guess i wanna be producer, since i wanna create my own trance music.
didn't know everyone thinks tiesto isn't talented.,. why? thought he is good dj and producer(he creates own trance too right?)
ALso didn't know dj and producers are fading away.... so there's no future for trance or something?
3. if dj's not musician...what are they?
4. I don't know lot of djs, so i was just mentioning tiesto as an example. |

A dj is not necessarily a musician. A dj can be a musician as well, but only if he makes music.
Tiesto plays mostly not his own music. thats Y he is "DJ" Tiesto.
Even remixers are not necessarily musicians. One has to construct new MUSICAL ideas in a remix before one can claim to be more than a dj.
Pretty much dj's do more/less performance art, they respond to the mood of the crowd, and the keep the people excited by reacting to the needs of the party goers. To do this they play or mix already made tracks.
If the tracks were made by them then they are also producers/musicians.
On the other hand "Playing" live (NOT Djing) requires some sort of real time music performance element, whether it be playing an instrument, or constructing new electronic leads on the fly to mix with premade music.
On the whole electronic music takes a large effort to sound interesting because of how all the effects are constructed, so it is not generally viable to create music on the fly. Personally I dont like live music, I prefer studio music which has taken weeks of tweaks to perfect, but thats just taste. |

P.S. a lot of people on ISRA are going to tell you that you dont need any music knowledge to make trance. This is complete bullshit... if you wanna make good stuff. If you wanna make run of the mill mediocre crap then their statement is completely true.
Fair warning. take it with a pinch of salt. |

When they really know what they are doing, they are the almighty weaver and greater than the sum of their record bag. |

It seems to me that he might just have a beginning musicians best interest in mind. |
