Music and Cultural Festival :: Ancient Olympia

MCF is taking place in the beautiful and unique area of Folois-Koumani, almost 40 km away from the centre of Olympia, looking down a 54.000 acre ancient forest and situated close to the temples of Pan and Artemis.
...Spread between 3 stages, MCF is a multi-festival bringing together 250 artists from 40 countries, with music ranging from Ethnic to DnB, Dubstep, Trance, Progressive, Ambient, Dub and Reggae.
On top of that, there will be a number of activities and performances taking place in or around the stages, including theatre, speeches, art and music workshops.
In order to make this festival as pleasurable as possible for all participating, we have decided to offer a limited number of tickets, 4000 in total number, sold through our website and our worldwide network of associates.
With a line-up that will surely satisfy even the most demanding traveller and a historical site set amidst nature at its best, we cant think of any reason this festival should be missed.

In parallel with the music, another series of cultural activities have been planned, which include theatrical plays, other entertainments, painting, speeches and workshops.
The subjects of those presentations will be either inspired by the theme of each day, by giving life to old myths, or relevant to other issues of wider interest, such as ecology, research on the electronic sound field and more
MCF ECOLOGY PROJECT
MCF is the first organised attempt to help promote and develop the beautiful area of Kapeli-Foloi, as well as the significance and protection of the rare oak forest, being one of the rarest in Europe and unique in Balkan area!
Our objective, through “The Ecology Project”, is to minimise our environmental footprint (that we leave as a result of our activities) and to maximise the benefits for the local communities in which we operate.

The Music and Cultural Festival has been extended to 6 days, since line up is huge in an effort to satisfy all! With a price of €75 the average daily price is only €12,5! Maybe the cheapest tickets for a festival of this kind!

The Ancient Forest
The Foloi oak forest was known to Ancient Greeks, because of its proximity to many of their settlements in the Elis region. The mysterious beauty of the forest inspired them to believe that it was a habitat of Centaurs and Fairies. They gave the forest the name Foloi and the chief of the Centaurs the name Folos . The fairies of the forest were the Dryades, which means oak-fairies.
Folois is the only plane forest in Greece, extending to 54000 acres of land, is consisted of seedling oaks and is integrated in the Natura 2000 network because of its great importance, appreciated since antiquity. It is located in mountainous Ilia in the borders of Arcadia and Achaia at the southwest foot of Erymanthos mountain, bordering on the east with Erymanthos river, west with Simopoulos village and south with villages Nemouta, Lala and Douka. Administratively it belongs to the municipalities of Lasio and Foloi and on the limits of municipalities of Lampeia and Oleni in an altitude of 600-630 metres. It owes it's name to mythology, named after the king of the Centaurs and friend of Hercules, Folos.
All through the plateau predominates the oak tree (drys), which the locals named Kapeli, which means dense forest or plenty forest. Kapeli is also called <<balcony of Ilias>>. From the highest mountains it resembles a huge ayry with a radius of 10 kilometers, from the lowest a scythe. It is one of the rarest forests, unique in the balkans.
The oak trees are tall, some straight as cypresses others wide with numerous boughs, looking like the <<queens of the forest>>. During earlier periods Kapeli was all united, nowadays it is consisted of the locally-named Antroneiki separated by a great cliff with Koumaneiki and Giarmeneikh.
GODNESS ARTEMIS
Known as a fierce hunter as well as protector, Artemis is one of the major Greek goddesses. Artemis is known as the goddess of the night, the huntress, the goddess of fruitfulness, the goddess of childbirth, Lady of the Beasts, the woodland goddess, the bull goddess, the personification of the moon, and the eternal virgin.
Artemis was one of the few goddesses immune to the enchantments of Aphrodite. In some instances Artemis is linked closely to the Roman and Italian goddess, Diana. There is some controversy as to the goddess that deserves the first rights, but it appears that Artemis was a later goddess. There is no doubt that the similarities are striking. Some people go as far as to call them one, the goddess Artemis Diana.
As a huntress, she happily traveled in woods in the company of dogs, wild beasts, and mountain nymphs. She brought about Orion's death, the unfortunate hunter, who either defied the goddess, or else tried to seduce one of her companions, the virgin Opis, or perhaps attempted to personally ravish her. Artemis sent a scorpion to sting his heel, and thus killed him.
But when Orion was subsequently changed into a constellation, Artemis made sure the scorpion received the same honor.
GOD PAN
He was the god of shepherds and flocks, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music. He wandered the hills and mountains of Arkadia playing his pan-pipes and chasing Nymphs. His unseen presence aroused feelings of panic in men passing through the remote, lonely places of the wilds.
The god was a lover of nymphs, who commonly fled from his advances. Syrinx ran and was transformed into a clump of reeds, out of which the god crafted his famous pan-pipes. Pitys escaped and was turned into a mountain fir, the god's sacred tree. Ekho spurned his advances and fading away left behind only her voice to repeat forever the mountain cries of the god.
Pan was depicted as a man with the horns, legs and tail of a goat, and with thick beard, snub nose and pointed ears. He was often appears in the retinue of Dionysos alongside the other rustic gods. Greeks in the classical age associated his name with the word pan meaning "all". However, it true origin lies in an old Arkadian word for rustic.
Pan was frequently identified with other similar rustic gods such as Aristaios, the shepherd-god of northern Greece, who like Pan was titled both Agreus (the hunter) and Nomios (the shepherd); as well as with the pipe-playing Phrygian satyr Marsyas; and Aigipan, the goat-fish god of the constellation Capricorn.
Sometimes Pan was multiplied into a host of Panes, or a triad named Agreus, Nomios, and Phorbas.

Taking into account the difficult economic circumstances, especially in Greece and because of the increased demand of ticket reservations, M.C.F has decided to extend the period of 300 tickets presale at €100,00 each, and to be one of the most cheap festivals worldwide, taking into account the product and the price that it offers. Also now there is the option of mass ticket purchase, as many of you had demanded. Now you can purchase 5 tickets at the price of €400,00 each(by purchasing 5 tickets you get 1 for free), only available online and by bank deposit. Please notice that just 1 month before the Festival, M.C.F offers a 9-day vacation package for camping in one of the most beautiful forests of Europe, with 250 musicians,artists,actors and perfomers from around the world
starting at the price of €8,90 a day. Also, for all of you which won't be able to be at the festival from Day 1, now you have the possibility to purchase in advance a 4-day ticket(weekend ticket) at the price of €80,00 each. I have wonderful memories from this festival since I lived magical moments there!
Really nice music despite the cancellations!
I liked the fact that there was a small number of people that attended the fest. It was like a small and happy psychedelic village!! (I don't think that the organizers have the same opinion though.)
