Artist : Murat Uncuoglu
Title : Rusty EP
Format : Digital
Label : Vapour Recordings
Release date : nov. 2008.

Vapour recordings, the Progressive House label run by Kasey Taylor, delivers its 71st instalment with a release signed by Turkish pioneer DJ, radio founder, electronic music activist, music producer, and label manager, Murat Uncuoglu. His output has seen him appearing on such respected labels as Fokused, Method/Baroque, Pangea and Vapour, of which he is also a representative, together with spinning for his own label Teknikal rotation. The time has come for a follow up.

1. Murat Uncuoglu : Rusty
The opening track is a deep and rather dark proggy tune with an effective droning bassline and pitch shifting lead which gets more reverb and intensity as the track develops and builds up tension. It blends a zest of minimal percussion arrangements with more shimmering effects such as the swift swirling 80’s pop arpeggio synth sample which IMHO sounds a bit off key or clumsy, seeming out-of-place in the general mix, especially in the break. Overall it’s a hybrid with a compelling rhythmic section, but which is somewhat lacking in coherent orchestration to be fully immersive.

2. Murat Uncuoglu : Rusty (Astronivo feat. Zombi Remix)
Next is a rmx of three Israeli artists : the Astronivo duo with the backing of Plusquam Dj Zombi. Their take on Rusty wrenches out almost all semblance of the original and grafts the remnants onto a stripped down bobbling tech-house track. It receives a crispier rhythmic treatment, shuddering and edging forward with more filtered fills and nervous off beat rhythmic hiccups creating a deft syncopation. Once again an excellent contribution from the Astronivo boys and this is an absolute winner in this release.

3. Murat Uncuoglu : Black out
“Black out” opens onto a skillful rhythmic section which quickly and sucessfully sets up an intricate weaving of the lead, a groovy bassline and snare punctuation to build up a nice groove. The melodic material is plain and punchy rather than uplifting and is limited to rough synth stabs. The track sprinkles recurring bells chimes in the backdrop which tend to become a bit invasive or awkward after a few listenings. Overall, it procedes steadily, without creating surprise, but it should fit well into the beginning of a prog-house set.

Bottom line
You can always trust Kasey Taylor to release quality music. This time, the real seduction operates from the Astronivo/Zombi rmx which really stands out in this package.
