High all, yes it's another sidechain thread but I thought you might be interested in it anyway
I heard about an interesting method of sidechaining multiple tracks by different amounts using only one plugin. Maybe some of you guys already do this but it's new to me so I thought I'd share it. It should work in any DAW with a bit of thought; I'll give you the Cubase version and perhaps someone else can translate if necessary I've tried it and it works pretty good.
First set up a Group track; in SX3 you might want to create a few (say 5) and use the right-most one, otherwise you may be unable to route to it correctly from other Group tracks you might use in future.
Next put a gate in the first insert slot. The gate should be triggered from your sidechain source, eg. a copy of your kickdrum track not routed to the main mix. The best way I've found to do this in SX is with the Kjaerhus GAG1_SC plugin, which is a pretty good gate with a MIDI or external sidechain input, but I sure there will be other ways.
The time-constants of the gate will determine how long the sidechain effect lasts ; at 128 bpm a very fast attack, 80ms hold and a release of about 41ms is a good place to start. btw this is why the DFX MIDI Gater plugin isn't suitable, because it doesn't have independant attack and release controls.
Now invert the input to the Group track. In SX you do this by clicking on the Phase button above the channel fader.
On every track you want to sidechain, set up an aux send to the sidechain group; now however much you send to that group is how much the track will duck when the gate opens. This is because the track is partially cancelling with the lower-level inverted copy of itself coming through the gate. Clever hey?
Adjust the release time on the gate so that the sidechaining grooves with the track. You'll get complete cancellation with the send at 0dB; all the detail is between -1dB and 0dB so it will need careful tweaking.
I reckon if you put an EQ after the gate you could do some interesting frequency-conscious sidechaining, eg. if you put a LPF after the gate set to about 120Hz you could make the bottom end of the bassline duck out when the kick hits but leaving the top end of the bassline intact. I think the choice of EQ here would be quite important! FL users have been able to do this for ages and now here's a way to do it in any DAW to multiple tracks with only two plugins

interesting indeed, thanx colin, id like to listen the effect with the inverted phase, this should give a more subtle pumping feeling with the sidechain since you have the dry signal and a sidechained version which partially canceling itself, nice one, should try asap

New world of experimenting to me.
