Multilevel Moderation?..

Hi, everybody.
I’ve been here only for 3 months, so maybe it’s not very proper of me to discuss the inner workings of the Forum. But I’d like to share a couple of ideas with you (both moderators and “regular” members), which may make Forum moderation easier and smoother for everybody.

The idea is simple (and not mine):
every time a user creates a new topic he/she automatically becomes a moderator for that topic.

This way the “real” moderators will no longer have to read every post and issue warnings about off-topic stuff or extinguish flame wars. There will still be a matter of moving/merging threads to prevent proliferation of clone topics. But the “micro-moderation” will be done locally in every topic. It will be a topic moderator’s right (and responsibility) to delete spam and inflammatory posts and to steer the discussion. And if somebody consistently causes troubles in the thread – only then the thread moderator will need to alert the forum moderator. This way the top-level moderators can identify forum trolls quickly and more objectively.

Problems with this idea?
A couple:
First, there will be some overbearing thread moderators, who will delete 80% of the posts. This kind of power trip ends quickly, once people abandon the topic. The topic creator (hopefully) learns from his mistake and becomes less tyrannical next time.
Second, a person may open a topic (or a hundred) and not give a rat’s ass about it. Then it’s back to what’s going on now: forum moderators will have to identify (and possibly lock) messy topics. But I am pretty sure these orphaned threads will be a minority – so it’s still going to be easier on forum moderators than it is now.

I’d like to hear what both moderators and “regular” members think about it. Does it sound like something that would make things easier/better here?

I think creating an extra level of moderation with give “regular” members an opportunity to help the IsraTrance team, decrease “real” moderators’ workload and hopefully eliminate the “members vs. moderators” way some people see this site.

It's easy to see this wont work. Why?

An example:

Member X create a topic with his favorite top 5 (yeah this one has never been seen before - irony). Then Member Y post his top 5 but member X does not like it because it's not the right "genre" according to Member X's taste. Member X decide to delete Member Y's top 5.

I see way too many problems with your suggestion. In a perfect World yes. On Isratrance No

This scenario is what I meant by problem No. 1.
I've seen it in a different forum. This kind of behavior lasts no longer than 1-2 days. Either Y’s top 5 really were out of place – then life goes on. Or X is a control freak and will end up deleting A, B and C’s posts as well. At this point X becomes very lonely in his little kingdom and earns a reputation of a fascist jerk. Then he either stops opening threads or changes his behavior. (The only danger here is that now every member will have a separate Top 5 thread )

So, problem No. 1 naturally eliminates itself most of the time. But there is no automatic way to deal with the orphaned thread problem (No. 2) – that’s where forum moderators will still have to step in.

interesting idea, not sure it would work the way you describe, but it could be improved of course. Need a good brainstorming ...
Will surely write it down.

thanks

I can tell you immediately that this idea sounds good but will develop into a very bad one.

People will star erasing or editing others people post and a war will start sooner or later that will expand all around the forum.

Better to have 5000 people cursing against 10 moderators than having 5000 people cursing againsts each other.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

there are other options to let people moderate their own posts, like if more than 20 people grade some posts with "minus" it disappears from a post (closes) for example and can be seen only if you click a special button to expand all posts...
need to think about it.

that will be coo, some kind of reputation for user can also be helpful for moderators.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."
