Is there such a plugin that detects muddiness in the mix. Something that can show interfering frequencies. I know using your ears is the best, but my hearing has been hammered from slamming bassline over the years and was wondering if such a plugin excited to help the mixing process. |

just mix your track on low vol brother is the best tip
make the vol that your ears will chase the sound
and not the sound chase the ears !

I'm yet to try it myself, but Neuron (from Izotope) is said to have the ability to detect the masking that goes on between the sounds you use and even present you with some starting points automatically.
But to be 100% honest, Colin's answer is really all there is to it. If you were to go through the hassle of avoiding ANY masking altogether, you'd come up with a bad sounding mix. It's about developing good judgement, so you can trust your ears (i.e. yourself). |

Maybe a spectral analyzer, maybe there is a lead, or some percussion or something that is sounding at the same frequency that your bass or kick, and that creates frequency cancellation, and sometimes creates a muddy mixdown , I have realize after many years trying to get a good mix for my tracks, that making groups, helps a lot!.
I make always the same 9 or 10 groups, in this order
Kick and bass, hats, snares, percussion, stabs, fx, leads, pads, vocals, instrument.
In every single group, except kick and bass , I put a High pass filter, I love to use, Pro-Q 2. This will help you clean you mixdown a lot, and help you with the muddiness in your mix. |

I have the same approach as Bipolar.
Just recently I try to replace the cuts more with shelves on the groups, espescially pad group, to get more warmth in the mix. I also try to balance corresponding complete elements like kick and bass with cuts and dips here and there(finding sweet and weak spots) trying to achive a better morph in of these elements.
