Finally putting in some money I managed to save up into a ms20. This is going to be my first synth and frankly I'm not the greatest with synthesis but I think it would be interesting to learn hands on. I'd like some opinions though.

The new one or the old one?

I had an old one with the Korg 35 filter that was an amazing beast. The ESP section is pretty insane. I did start wanting more modulation routings, but as a first synth I'd say it was pretty hard to beat. Has a very distinctive sound, especially with the screaming/distorted resonance. Won't do the Moog style bass/sweeps at all though.

Haven't played with one of the new ones, but don't like that it's much smaller than the original.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

I got to trial the mini MS20 over the weekend. It seems fun but I think I'd rather go fully modular for more value. In this price range having also trialled the Minibrute & Sub Phatty I'd to the Minibrute. Only other synth that interests me would be the Bass Station II from Novation.

love my ms20 mini. heaps of character, lots of weird patches to be had, great entry into the modular workflow for a very reasonable price.

it often gets compared to the minibrute, and while they are in the same price range IMO it blows the brute out of the water in terms of the different types of uses and patches that you can create.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I definitely think the MS-20 as a semi-modular has a lot more variation due to the patchable aspects.

Just from my perspective I'm investing the majority of my current income into a rather large (12U) eurorack system, whereas the Minibrute that I demo'd has some unique sounds that remind me a lot of really nice late 90's darker Israeli psy. I'm sure I'd be able to get similar in a modular or semi-modular but having a small keyboard that can easily dial them up seems good (I've been offered a demo Minibrute for $350 with warranty).

But I reckon for those who can't afford a proper modular system, or don't quite feel ready to go fully modular the MS20 mini is great value.

There's also the Dark Energy unit from Doepfer, and in a reasonable price the Pittsburgh Modular Foundation 2.0 is an absolute quality beast that does far more than what it sells for. I've got a friend with one & it's what convinced me to go modular and include a few Pittsburgh modules such as the oscillator & filter.           Cuntus Maximus.

Thanks for the replies. I know somebody importing the MS-20 mini to India at a very reasonable price.

I've heard good and not so good things about the minibrute. Again - different people with different experiences. But I think saving a little more money and going completely modular would be a fantastic idea.

Doepher has stopped manufacturing Dark Energy I think?
