Holy crap... I guess not! I don't recall anything like that on SX2...

I'm getting my SX3 update this weekend, I'll check on that. That seems strange that Wavelab AND Neundo would do it and SX wouldn't...

wavelab has an "extract audio from dvd" function - never used it though

for .avi's and probably mpegs as well - i just load them into nuendo, and it seperates the audio/video automatically for me

It looks like the WaveLab function is to extract audio from DVD-Audio discs (music), not movies. Poop.

From what I've seen SX2 or 3 doesn't do the audio separation for AVI's and mpegs - they probably want you to buy Nuendo. Heheh.

That's awesome that Sonar does that stuff automatically in regards to AVI/Quicktime etc. However, remember that there is a lot of heavy audio compression that occurs when they encode those types. A lot of divx movies have a 128kps MP3 as their audio track, which is pretty crappy.

If you're going to take a sample it's really best to use clean DVD audio if the movie is available for rent/purchase. After all... if you're going to jack their audio... it's the least you can do!

There's a VirtualDub Mod called zFlicks that can open the DVD directly. I think you could use that but I'm not sure.

I use DVDX, it's freeware, you can open individual .VOB video files direct from DVD and save just the audio stream.

File -> Open Mpegs
select the DVD drive, open one of the vob files (or use IFO mode to do the whole movie)

Click the filmstrip icon (output settings)
Select the AVI option instead of VCD
Un-click the 'enable video' button
Change "Use Lame" to "Store to Wavs"
To the right, next to 'max frame' click "whole"
Select the directory destination and rip.

it will create a zero k video file and a separate .wav file

That way you've gone directly from high quality DVD audio to .WAV, if you're grabbing audio from an AVI file it's already been compressed as an mp3 inside the AVI.

Obviously this app is intended for far more involved video transcoding and not this one simple function, If anyone knows a simpler app, let me know

I have tried to use this DVDx but when i follow the procedure that Aeon is suggesting i get an error saying something about DeCSS ... ???

DeCSS is the copy protection put on DVDs, usually easily dispatched by these kinds of programs... what exactly is the error being listed?

If it's something about "won't be able to lock the drive", that doesn't matter, just keep loading it anyway.          http://soundcloud.com/aeon604

Did you know that the audigy soundcards have the most easy solution to all of this? Just press 'record what you hear' and you got any sample from anything you play in a sec. Now my audigy is gone, I sample from out to in. It's the easiest way I think.

btw: sampling from movies rocks and it doesn't matter what kind of movie... As long as there is no background music you can use anything, the more 'out of context' the better I'd say. (So plz no more outer spacy or druggy lsd samples cause they're boring & old)

Glad it worked out... I would've liked to recommend a simpler program that's made just for doing the audio settings bripping, but this one is freeware and most other stuff isn't.

Glad I could help, I'm just trying to repay this forum for all the help it's given me, i've gotten so much good advice, presets, sounds etc from the likes of Colin, Denny, SD6, Slyman604... and many more...

A great many....

http://www.google.com/search?q=avi+audio+ripper

Remember, anything that's "divx" or "xvid" is technically an .AVI, so that's the kind of file you're looking to extract from.           http://soundcloud.com/aeon604
