hell-o!
personally I prefer to take samples from old terror/suspense/sfi movies (50´s to 80's),I usually order them tru Amazon or old movie stores around here.I think it's a matter of personnal taste,it depends what kind of atmosphere you want to create or what you want to do with the samples...
there are new recent movies with very good voices on it,but usually they are used already and abused (matrix, kill bill, etc)
also a good way to take some samples is to connect to some shitty online radios (like the ones with no musik, only people talking) and record some speeches...the other day I was after some samples and connected to a radio...after some time listening I get some nice speeches about people who were kidnapped by aliens ehehehehhe
anyway my friend,SEARCH,and you will find what you want!
keep it up,good luck and good work!!!

if you run a mac, get a copy of audio hijack.
It really easy to use and you can hijack audio from almost any format.
not sure if it's available for PC though...

Unfortunately Audio Hijack is not available for PC....
I have been looking for a decent PC equivalent that was freeware, but so far to no avail. I just tend to record the audio from my home dvd player to my soundcard. Sometimes there is some ambient noise that isn't supposed to be there, but that can usually be reduced.

I don't usually use too many quotes from movies, but it's great to "borrow" atmospherics from them. Any horror movie should be great for those strange atmospheres, as well as decent sci-fi flicks too... But I have also sampled from movies like Kung Pow- Enter the Fist, and Brotherhood of the Wolf. Currently attempting to use samples from the Butterfly Effect... (What a friggin trippy movie)           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Would this work for DVDs as well?? I would like to avoid having to convert the DVD to AVI and then using virtual dub from there....           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

There's a VirtualDub Mod called zFlicks that can open the DVD directly. I think you could use that but I'm not sure.

I use DVDX, it's freeware, you can open individual .VOB video files direct from DVD and save just the audio stream.

File -> Open Mpegs
select the DVD drive, open one of the vob files (or use IFO mode to do the whole movie)

Click the filmstrip icon (output settings)
Select the AVI option instead of VCD
Un-click the 'enable video' button
Change "Use Lame" to "Store to Wavs"
To the right, next to 'max frame' click "whole"
Select the directory destination and rip.

it will create a zero k video file and a separate .wav file

That way you've gone directly from high quality DVD audio to .WAV, if you're grabbing audio from an AVI file it's already been compressed as an mp3 inside the AVI.

Obviously this app is intended for far more involved video transcoding and not this one simple function, If anyone knows a simpler app, let me know

Hell yes!!!! Thanks Aeon... I was getting tired of recording the movie using Soundforge and my soundcard.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

i've got a question about the copyright when using samples from movies. do you have to take care of legal issues if you use samples from movies in your tracks, assuming that your tracks get released ?

Uh... "Yes". (No.)

First, The negative consequences of sampling copyrighted material is a lawsuit. Since most psy-trance labels probably have less than a few thousand dollars/euros in the bank, any movie studio trying to sue them would probably lose money in legal fees. This legal process usually starts with a cease & desist order, but since most small labels only make one printing of a CD, you've already ceased and desisted.

Second, psy trance isn't popular enough for anyone in those movie studios legal departments to ever hear the songs.

Third, even if they did notice, they'd probably just laugh... voice samples are like free promotion for that movie. Blade Runner has been sampled more often by more different genres of music than anything anywhere, stuff that's a lot more popular than Psy. I've never heard of any legal action there. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone?

It's not like a rap/hip-song that's making millions of dollars by sampling a musical loop that's an integral part of the song.

So, in summary, it's just not worth their time to bother.

That being said, GMS should probably watch their backs. Not for 'samples', but for doing stuff like re-making the Beetlejuice and Star Wars themes and listing themselves as composers. Small potatoes, sure, but that might be pursued as a lawsuit just on principle or to set an example if Danny Elfman or George Lucas got annoyed.

very good explanation aeon

i really like the old educational films from america (propellerheads used one of them extensively on decksanddrumsandrockandroll, more specifically the one about how a record works), and documentaries... Not a lot of background, and always a calm but good sounding voice that says the weirdest things (if u take them out of context)

mubali: wavelab has an "extract audio from dvd" function - never used it though

for .avi's and probably mpegs as well - i just load them into nuendo, and it seperates the audio/video automatically for me

illusions: Same with Sonar and mpeg/avi/quicktime/etc. I just drag and drop the movie into the Sonar window and it does the rest for me ... Doesn't SX do the same?
