Get a wave editing/recording program such as Goldwave or Soundforge or whatever.
Goldwave has a working demo that you can use at http://goldwave.com/ that is only slightly limited, but will work for this.
Click the volume control if you're in Windows, go options properties, select recording radio button. Under 'show the following volume controls' make sure you've selected 'stereo mix' and push ok. Then make sure Stereo Mix Slider is selected as a recording source. Keep this volume control window open.
Put in your dvd and start playing it, position the DVD so it is just before the audio you want, I use VLC video player to watch DVDs, this works ok.
Start Goldwave or whatever, and create a new audio file at either the same audio quality you're track is at or higher. Push record on Goldwave, push play on the dvd, and record a test.
Try to get the volume on your windows Stereo Mix to be as high as it can without clipping the audio you're recording.
When you get it right, record it for real. Normalize the audio file, and crop it if you want, or crop and normalize in cubase.
This is only one way to do it, but it's how I do it. Your windows volume control may be different, but that is essentially how it's done. |

I have been sampling from movies this way for longer than I've been using Cubase, so I suppose that is why I am still in the habit of using an external program.
In addition to that, I have trouble on my system with Cubase sharing my soundcard with other applications, such as a dvd player. Because my soundcard is a piece of shit. |

This is good advice, however much of the time the availability of the "Stereo mix" option varies depending on your sound hardware.
Many external USB/firewire devices don't have this option for some reason.
In this case, it's best to use one of the ripping programs I referenced in that link.

rip to avi or divx
then remove aduio from video and save asd wav
use cooledit pro
virtual dub doesnt work for may files
  Nocturnal Wizardz Recs
Bhooteshwara Records
Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life, craving for more. |
