get some ddr3 1600mhz with cl8 timmings at least.
about timmings ill give you an example.

a ddr3 cl7 1333mhz memory is faster than a ddr3 1600mhz cl9 a ddr3 1600mhz cl8 is pretty much the same in terms of speed with a 1333 cl7 but the 1600 cl8 will overclock better or even work in smaller cl ( 7-6 ) when underclocked thus meaning that get a ddr3 1600 cl8 you will have a small advantage in speed and more space for a cpu overclock!

Correct me if im wrong but The 920 has a locked multiplier and can only use 800Mhz and/or 1066Mhz RAM at default/factory settings. So in order to utilize the speed of Maximum 1333Mhz on the DDR3 memory you need to achieve 3.2Ghz overclocking on the CPU via FSB increasing. So if your not gonna overclock then go for 1066Mhz memory.           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

nope... you can utilise the speeds that the motherboard is capable of supporting without overclock!

my previus foxconn and the gigabyte i have now support memory up to 1600mhz without any overclock!

yes the multiplier is locked but i7 920 dont have an fsb anymore so the memory speeds and cpu fsb isnt linked anymore!           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

you guys built a computer for gamers , the dude that opened the topic you really don't need the i7 and 6gb of memory,it's a total waste of money IMO like i told you i have q9550 and 4 gb and i open 15 nexus/atmosphere/trilogy jin a project and it works like a charm, but if you want to waste money for nothing,as you wish.

built for gamers? based upon what? i'd agree with you if there would have been a recommendation to get a Radeon 5880 or Geforce 295. "waste money for nothing" no disrespect but that has to be the stupidest statement in a long time, not only because you can never have enough computing power, but a q9550 costs just as much (from what iŽve seen at resellers, the few that still has it in stock) and that the architecture is outdated and the socket is DEAD!
And concerning 6Gb, the i7 uses tri-channel memory so its in pair of 3 memory sticks so easiest you end up with 3, 6, 9GB and so.

One more note: when it comes to GpuGpu solutions, when developers start utilize Open CL and DirectCompute 5.0 weŽll use the GFX parallell processing together with the CPU. so i bet you that in a close future weŽll see DAWS and high end GPU-cards.

whatever vegetal,i'm very happy with my q9550 and i'm sure most of the artists here as well.i would save the money for external gear and buy q9550 with 4gb and EP45 motherboard it'll do the job perfectly.TOPE,i'd take what you wrote in the beginning:
Intel Core2 Quad Q9550
Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR
4 x Kingston ValueRam 1GB PC6400 DDR2 RAM
Sapphire Radeon HD4650 512MB
Seagate Barracuda 7200 320GB
SONY OPTIARC AD-5200A-OB 20X DVDRW

good luck with this.

Eheheh...thank you guys for all your comments...The thing is Deranger, i know perfectly that my first choice would do the job, but i rather pay more 100/150 pounds and have a more recent pc with faster memory...the thing that made me think was the fact that 775 socket will be descontinued from intel...The i7/i5 are the new kids on the block therefore more future proof...
Its nice to see that you are happy with your setup and i thank you for your advice!

Cheers guys!!

im sure you are so happy with what you got, but if your so devoted on saving money for "external gear" whatever that definition means to you, you might as well go for a dual core or even buy a single core if you want to "save money". Fact is that the computer will be the heart in your studio AND that a you wonŽt save a penny on getting a s775 cpu and motherboard not now nor tomorrow. fact is that getting a i5 750 or a socket M3 with the PII architecture if you want to save even more money and still be able to upgrade in the future + you will get you more power for less money so your reasoning fails. Sorry facts are facts
