Needed for a desktop PC which will be used solely for music production. I guess CPU should be at least Dual Core (or Quad) but maybe two single-core CPUs is also an option. This also brings the question of the Motherboard. Anyone got any advice ? Thanks
PS Wasnt sure where to post... hope its the right subforum |

It got delayed until 1q of 2012.
But since the CPU will be compatible with 1155 chipset, you could build your computer today and next year swap the processor.

You'd be better getting the lastest CPU you can afford. An Intel core i5 or i7 you do you nicely (as linked by Login). I have a core i7-920+3 gig RAM which is a couple of years old. Even on tracks that are nearly finished in cubase, the cpu meter barely goes over 40-50%, and I can overclock it when/ if I need it. You could find a first gen i7 system second hand I'm sure if money is really tight |

Oh, Sandy Bridge... yea well, it's a new architecture, but it's already in the brand new MacBook.
Also, the I7 is built on this architecture, and the I7x http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_i7#Core_i7
I have friends using these, so i'm not sure how delayed it actually is?!
The I7 got some mixed reviews. Gamers were not impressed, but for raw math work, it should be really impressive.. like realtime sound rendering This also makes sense if you read Kick Muck's post just above |

Nop, the new architechture is Ivy bridge, to be realesed next year. Sandy bridge isnt also the high end, that is still the x58 platform (i7 920 and up)
Sandy bridge is the latest, and its chipset and socket will be compatible with Ivy bridge.
i7 2600k and i5 2500k are the best you can get right now, if you dont need two 16x PCIe lanes(only avaible in x58 platform), mostly for handling two video cards. Or maybe if you want to use Audio cards with PCIe connection the two lanes at 16x can come usefull.
I am still on a i5 560 and its quite good and enough, but i dont add 100's of plug ins.
