i just LOVE the fact that in reaper, you can adjust pan law on a per-channel basis. |

So i'm curious guys, aren't you worried about going crazy with panning, knowing that your music might eventually end up getting played back on mono sound systems?
Sounds can completely disappear or lose their impact once you listen in mono. Do you pan instruments while monitoring in mono?

Who use a mono soundsystem today??
My mother listen mono radio but there she's never hear any psy-trance or other electronic dance music hehe
I analyze many professional records and 90% of them is not mono compability. Sometimes instruments are only in antiphase.
So I dont care for mono compatibility too much. Its old task for me.
We have 5.1 and more soundsystems today and we still looks for mono compatibility?? Who use mono soundsystems today?? Parent and grandparents maybe....

in answer to the question, I think it depends on the synth.
The panning you do on the channel will be a 'flat' line, whilst the one on any synth could be a potentially different shape, so it could sound different. (AFAIK, panning law is done after both these stages and doesn't come into it, but I thought I'd point out this came into my thoughts, when I mention the flat panning line )
Next, if the source from the synth is in stereo, panning the out could have very different results, depending on how the patch on the synth is set up.
Bottom line is, On a dual mono source out of a synth I wouldn't expect to hear a difference, but wouldn't be surprised to hear one either. I also don't think it matters that much. If you are getting a result you are happy with, then thats all that matters.
Also worth noting that not all synths have a pan control... Some employ equal panning laws... some do not. So its impossible to give a 100% answer.
Perhaps it would be easiest to say that doing it in the channel will give you the most consistent result. .
