i'm on the verge of buying monitors and due to my budget i'm restricted to these choices:
Alesis monitor one mk2 active..187
Tannoy reveal active..276
Event tr6..285
Fostex pm1..253
samson resol 80a..212
all prices are in british pounds and are the best i've found so far in the u.k.
It would be cool if people who already own these monitors could tell me their ups n downs as i'm really confused...thanks a lot..

I use passive monitors. I have owned the passive versions of two you mentioned--the MonitorOne, as well as the Reveals. The reveals are truer all around, the Alesis sound a bit like the bass is jacked up. The Tannoys are very unforgiving, and, well, revealing...meaning if your mids suck, they will not lie. If you are not using a sub, I would get the ones that are rated to the lowest frequency, for instance I believe the Reveals are rated down to 55Hz, and the Alesis can hit 45Hz. Do you want 10Hz of guesswork? Dunno about the others.

I think the most important thing with monitors is to have the full frequency range, and then listen to a lot of reference material. The basic differences between one type of monitor and another are not so important as your knowledge of your monitors, and their frequency limits. In other words, they're all decent. Get the whole frequency range, learn the monitors, learn the room and its modes, and you're good.

I have a pair of M1 actives as well and they don't go flat down to 38 Hz...they go flat (+/-3dB kind of flat) down to 50 maybe 45Hz. Be wary with companies and the way they reference the performance of their products. The Alesis for example might produce a frequency of 38Hz, but if that is -10dB from the rest of the spectrum, you won't be getting a very good idea about what is really going on in the subs.
Anyway, for the price they are very good.

Psychosomatic , i think the best it s to wait to have money to buy some "pro" monitors not semi pro ,cause you ll be tired (after some months or years ...) and realise you have lost money.

@ nolightatend...well i do know wt i need! mackie hr824's or genelec 1032a's or dynaudio bm6a...only problem is i can't afford those right now, n i can't wait to save n buy one of these monitors later on..
so i have to decide between the alternatives that i mentioned above...which fall into my price range..i don't mind buying better one's later on when i can afford em

i own the pm1 , you can do good mix with it, i prefer them to the yamaha msp5 and the beringher truth and the samson of the same category , pm1 are better for the bass ,samson you need the sub cause they stop at 65 hertz.

Buy the best monitors you can afford. If the Alesis is all you can afford, then go for it.
Getting used to your monitors in your studio enviroment is the most important thing. Unless you have an acoustically treated room, you are ultimately not going to be getting the flat frequency response the HR824s, or BM15As, deliver. Once you get used to your monitors, once you A and B your tunes to your favourite sounding ones and once you understand what a great sounding mix on a P.A., sounds in your studio enviroment, you'll be fine.
I started off with a pair or Absolute 2's, then went to the Alesis M1s (which I still have) and now use the HR824s as my main monitors. As you progress you will make more cash from either selling records, or your day job and get better monitors, treat your room acoustically and reach a point where you are completely happy and confident when you push the faders. Self-assurance comes slowly and from your self, not from one day to the other and from expensive monitors.           Me>You
