I ask myself with what plug in i can make my sounds
bigger in panorama. Sometimes i use the stereo widener from the predator as insert, but now i got a new pc and it didn´t work.
I have tried with a Chorus but the results are not so good.
Has anyone a idea how i can realize that ?

Cheers Banke

GOOD TOPIC
i hope we get a lot of input from producers for this thread.

i;M at a point where i'm almost convinced that i get better panorama from some DAWs then others.

there is a lot of tricks, besides chorus, to enhance stereo.. like the split channel (hard left/hard right 1 with offset trick among others.
'''clever panning

I wouldn't do it with a stereo widener.

Do it manually and edit both channels seperate.

Also keep in mind that you achive wide sound by contrast.

If everything is huge and wide, the effect won't be so spectacular.           http://soundcloud.com/seamoon

also splitting the signal (panning hard left&right)and do different EQing on both.

for me detuning the left from the right is usallly what work best, biger sound with the detuning + stereo spread (left and right chanels dont play at same time the more you detune them the more it add delay between the chanels, you could resample and use a sampler to do fucking huge sound and experimenting by modulating the phase so the wavforms don t triger the same on each notes like a oscillator or just bounce 2 times the synth beeing carreful with the detune to sound good or use synths that let you do that inside), or you could delay the left from the right . basically difference in sound between the left and right chanel make the illusion of a wider stereo image. check in mono while you are doing these things (you can use a meter dont remember the name it goes from +1 to -1,+1 mean mono both chanel the same - 1 cancellation ,from 0 to -1 it s not very good usualy)

What's wrong with a stereo widener?
Except it might not work well on stuff in the lower regions because of phasecancellation. But otherwise on pads for example i'd say it works quite well. Doubling tracks and hard panning them could of course also work well.

yes might depends wich one ,some might be worst than others but i like more the sound of detuning the left and right ,it can really make a simple mono lead sounding big (and then use a stereo widener if it s not enought or delaying both side )

I'm a big fan of good, old fashioned, stereo chorusing. Waves doubler is also great.

Whatever your approach to **any** stereo signal ... be sure to check in mono as you mix

Another nice way is to EQ M/S differently. You can sometimes get more bass into the sides than you can with the mids.

Different daws do indeed pan differently, BTW.

The underiding point I'd like to really focus on with this post though is ... the more stereo you make a signal, the more you need to check out the mono mix. Trust!           .

I often use the Stereo Expander that comes with soundforge, at about +50% on leads and stuff. Its pretty nice.

Im with both PoM and Speakafreaka -
Detuning left and right differently can make a very nice illusion of wider sound,

A simple saw lead with a vintage chorus like
http://kunz.corrupt.ch/?Products:VST_Chorus-60
will make it very wide...

But i think clever panning is of the essence if we look at the whole stereo picture and not just individual sounds.

Like supergroover and Wizack Twizack say, a stereo expander/wider can sometimes do the trick, its all about experimenting

Btw PoM its called correlation meter.

I prefer stereo-widening of the whole mix, not single elements, and, in most cases single elements need to be narrowed to keep the sound transparent

However, for some solo parts widening makes sense, and for that cases i usually use Steinberg stereoexpander (that one with single slider)           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

layering make your sounds wider.
there are few ways i do it:
1. i have the sound that i like and after open the vst and load the same sound but little bit change it. and maybe open even another vst and also change the sound little bit, and after layer them.
2. after i got the sound i want, i try to do copy the same sound with another vst and then layer the sounds.

i think that this are the ways to make your sound realy wide. after at the final mix i can put on them chorus or doubler or whatever if i fill it won't be too much.

Often when using stereo expanders I end up with phase-problems. Sometimes I group ex. leads to one group, percussion to another group etc. and then add a subtle stereo expander on each group, and try to not overdo it, but adjust the desirable width for each group. But one thing I have thought of when I listen to some of my favorite tracks is the space and clarity in the stereo picture/panorama. Seems like each element has it's very own place in the stereo picture, but often when I try to achieve that myself, the mix ends up sounding either uneven, stereo-wise, or just a wide wall of sound. I try to lower the volumes on the elements that stick out, or maybe EQ it differently but hm...
