While I'm at it, I have some more questions I thought I might pose.
-What tool do you use for your hpf on your subs? I've been using Waves Q1, but lately it seems like it rolls off too slowly. Is there something better to give a nice sharp cut? Is a sharp (ie 24) hpf advisable?
-When you EQ your bass and kick, how do you identify which to cut? Which to boost? I've been playing my kick and bass solo'd and then sweeping through the freq's from high to low with an EQ with a high Q. Everytime I hear a nasty resonance I guess which one is causing it and attenuate a little at that frequency on either the kick or bass or both. This seems to allow me to bring up the overall levels for the same overall volume. I guess this is kind of like manual compression, but it's getting me closer to the sound I want. I also tend to cut a lot out of both from 250-800Hz, leaving a little in the 1k range for presence.
-kick and bass marriage. Has anyone tried tuning a kick to match the key of the bassline, trimming off any 'tail' on the kick larger than 1/16th note and then layering that tail on the bass notes for a more 'gelled' sound between the two? It's something I've been meaning to try, but curious if anyone else has had any luck/failure with it.
-How much space do you give to the kick and bass? For a while I was mixing with my kick and bass dominating up to 1k, but recently have been pushing my leads/fx down lower and limiting the bass to under 250Hz (roughly).
-why is writing music/engineering more fun than work? it's killing my career. |

Haven't been able to afford the waves plugins, what I usually do with bass is as far as dynamics/eq goes is compress it usingthe Logic compressor, then EQ it with the channel eq. I high pass it somewhere around 40hz or so, with anything between a 24db slope to 48db depending on the sub energy. Usually get rid of the boomy freqs quite brutally, so I get more of a "hollow" sound.
When it comes to tuning the kick, I usually try and do it with the EQ, so that I get I suppose a false fundamental, that's more in tune with the bass. With some other subtle EQ'ing, it's not too bad, as the first couple of harmonics are well within the bass register, and you can get it sounding pretty solid. I usually drop off the muddy partials that you get between about 500 and 800hz a bit.
As for synths and stuff, II usually leave a lot of the lower-mid energy to reinforce the bassness, but saying that, it's all highpasses so that I don't have to worry too much.
Usually -if- I compress, and it's a big if, I EQ after compression, as I find this tends to re-introduce some of the dynamics without losing the compressed feel.
Yeah. That's about it.

I like the idea of EQing the kick to create a false fundamental. I presume your fundamental is the bass (with the kick forming the upper harmonics)?
thanks Dream, that helps.

Well, I do it like that so that I don't have to put a bass note where I have the kick. But on the odd chance that I do, I use Colin's excellent tips on sidechaining to try and make sure that the bass drops whereever the kick is.
As always this kind of thing is always easier to show than to explain. I'll try and get some examples out sooner or later, look me up on icq or msn or something.

use a multi band limiter on your career and you'll have more time for music.
also try a lowpass filter |
