Monster Zoku Onsomb! - "Attack!"

Monster Zoku Onsomb are Miss Penelope Leisure, kiki.ILL, Señor Tasty Taste, Sharkie Bubba & Fluff Daddy. With an EP, a 12" & a world tour under their belt, they've managed to get this album pressed in time to present it live around the world on their current voyage of rampant destruction

1. "Eat Brains"
First track on the CD is a escapade into a land where tweaked out surf rock competes with vocoded freakery for domination of the landscape. Basically the Beach Boys learnt how to write tweaked out electronica before they were eaten by zombies, then the zombies wrote this

2. "Day They Came Back"
Now the zombies are taking over the world & everybody is shit-scared. If you've heard "Mammon" on the new Snog album, this is the same track but with different vocals. If you haven't, then like the last track, this has the whole surf rock meets banging psychedelia vibe, but this time we're one step closer to the apocalypse

3. "E. PhUMPerdInK"
It's fun, it's easy, it's exciting.. it's fucking fat!!! Breakbeat extravaganza with an emphasis on booty pumping bass drops. An extraordinarily well-produced bass sound engages in a very tightly sequenced call & response routine with a tweaky top end acid sound. Just remember to clench

4. "Dead Eyes Glow"
O. K. fuck. Basically the zombies are back, but this time they've gone a bit crazy. Either that or watching them take over the world in double or triple time. This is a really fast tune with a rock 'n' roll beat backing up a pretty zappy melodic lead

5. "Poison Soil"
A distorted synth sound rides over the top of a groovy breakbeat. I'm not sure what's going on here. It sounds like the alien protectors of Earth have arrived & are trying to hypnotise the zombies! Quite successfully too, as this is certainly one of the calmer moments on the album thus far, although I think the zombies are fighting back at the end - there's bombs going off everywhere!

6. "Ka Ka Monster"
This is one of my favourite tracks from the live show & it's interesting to hear it on a CD. Again, it's got this tough sorta surf beat to it.. basically a broken beat at a tempo halfway between breaks & jungle. The vocals don't seem to be as dominant as they are when performed live. It's all overseen by a buzzy mid-range bassline

7. "Thai Angle"
hehehhehe.. this is a funny tune. The vocals make me laugh. They sound kinda "Thai style", which I'm thinking is what gave the track its name, although I might not think they were Thai if it wasn't called that, but anyway... Like the last tune, this is one that is better live, simply because Miss P. & Sharkie have great stage presence that make it much more than a groovy beat with vocals

8. "The Coroner Comes"
This is pretty full on. Really fast, cut up drum & bass. "Music to be murdered by" hahahahahah! Fair bit of vocoder action. We're told to "relax. Lean back & enjoy ourselves.. until the coroner comes"! Then we're pummeled by this pretty hammering beat & the vocoder again. There's a little breakdown for a robot routine (another highlight of the live show) then back into it for a little while before the track winds to a close

9. "Wet Seance"
Kooky stuff. Like oddball lounge music. Lotsa random samples. I dunno what happened to all the zombies. I think the aliens beat them all off & have now imposed some sort of eccentric order upon the world!

10. "(s)Tinker"
More fat breakbeat now. A bit crazier than "E. PhUMPerdInK" & not quite as round in the bottom end, but still sure to push a fair volume of air from the speakers. Again, this is stirring memories of the stage show. It's quite hard to limit the review simply to the music

11. "Nuclear Assault (Flipper Edit)"
Alrighty then. I think all of the humans have gone insane under alien rule & are now revolting. I don't know what they're yelling, but they sound very pissed off. I think I make out "I like taking orders!!!" I think he might be being sarcastic. This can only be described as the borderline of hardcore punk & electronica. Fucking fast, fucking hard, fucking angry

All in all I'm not sure what to say. It's a great album, that's for sure, but I don't think the live show really translates. Luckily, they're currently doing a world tour, so those of you lucky enough to live close to a city where they are playing will be able to receive the full treatment. Check their website (http://www.monsterzoku.com/) for details. In the absence of that luxury, I can only recommend that you BUY THIS CD!! 9/10 if you can see the live show. 9.5/10 if you can't
