Read this http://www.musicradar.com/tuition/tech/fms-guide-to-mastering-using-mid-side-eq-574740
"Using a Mid/Side EQ can be very useful in the mastering process. Basically it splits a stereo signal into 'Mid' and 'Side' channels. Now, the Mid is all the mono information, that is to say everything which is identical in the left and right speaker, and the Side channel is the opposite: It contains any information which is different between the left and the right speaker."

mid/side eq can be very useful for solve some problems.
normally, its good to leave the low part of your mix without any kind of stereo spread. If u have any sounds that u really want to spread it to stereo and it has low component, u can split it in bands and spread only the mid/high part of this audio.
u can understand me?
