Hi there,

I read a little about mono and stereo, when it comes to bass and drums. But then i got a little confused.. I came to the conclusion that the kick should be in mono and preferably ther perc too. So i checked my sample library, and all my samples was in stereo
I guess it's really up to myself? But does it make a big difference if my kick, bass and so on, is in stereo or mono? And why?

I dont really get it

I hope some of you can help me out here.

well I feel that with stereo kicks etc. loose punch

afaik I've never seen kick samples in stereo

+ I read that club systems are wired in mono for the lowend mostly even today so it would be good if in your tracks the lowend is mono too           https://soundcloud.com/noordzee-laborant

commercial sample libraries release they stuff only in stereo. Mono doesn't weight that much as double mono or pseudo'stereo'. You probably won't find a kick in true stereo in any commercial sample library. Don't worry about the two channels when you analyse your kick sample - it still is centered.

http://www.toneprojects.com/products/plug-ins/basslane/

that free plug in is great to get the bottom part of anything mono, while the rest is stereo.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Ok i think i get. But if i make a kick in lets say Dune, then press the mono button to make sure it's mono. Then i render it to a audio clip, but it still end up like a stereo sample. Unless i mark "convert to mono" in ableton when i render the sample. So does ableton make a "pseudo-stereo" sample? or didnt i get anything right ?

If I choose to make a bass sound in lets say zebra. I mostly choose the retrigger function which is monophonic, so guess my bassline is in mono? So would it still be good to use the basslane plugin?
I guess the sound can spread a little, depending on the fx i use on my bass?

i hope it's understandable.. im a little confused.

A retrigger function only makes sure the sound starts at the beginning of the cycle each time a midi note is hit. It has nothing to do with being mono. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

By default audio and midi channels are stereo I think.
It depends on the DAW how you set up a mono channel.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Retrigger: monophonic, each new note triggers the envelopes.

So much confusion!

Mono on a synth refers to Mono/Polyphony

Mono channel on a mixer refers to Mono/Stereo

I got even more confused after making this topic

So i just need to make sure, that my kick and bass channels are mono and not stereo?
And i dont have to care about the synths mono/polophony?

synths mono/poly refers to if they are able to play more than 1 note at a time.

The way I see it, is that stereo is just 2 mono channels with hard-coded panning.

Say you break a stereo audio file into a left and right mono channel. You have 2 mono tracks occupying the same pan position. Pan one one way x%, the other the same but the opposite direction. Voila, a stereo track, that you can control the volume and pan of each channel.

A mono kick and bass, at 0% pan, will come thru both left and right speakers equally.

Take a mono percussion sample, and pan it x% left, and it will only occupy the left side of the stereo master-out, whereas a stereo sample, panned the same, will have a right x% as well as left %. So basically if you use mono, you can set precisely where in the stereo field your percussion sample is occupying, but a stereo version of the same has 2 channels, with their pans hard-coded relative to one another. So say you pan a stereo sample 10% left, and a different stereo sample 10% right, their right and left channels might overlap or crosstalk, but if you did the same with 2 mono samples, there wouldn't be the same overlap.

So, graphically, sorta like this:

-----|----- <mono

----[-.-]---- <stereo

---|--.-----panned mono left

---[--.]----- panned stereo left

[ = left, .= center, ] right           .

to the op you dont really need to care if your sample are mono or stereo.. just if it sound good..

something mono both left and right speaker output identical sound so it sound in the center when not panned.
