I know that it would be important to listen to my tracks in mono sometimes to check if anything is ok if it would be played on a mono sytem (radio, pa... no, unfortunately my tracks are not that good yet but I'd like to test them anyway ;-) )
How do you guys do that? I work with cubase.
Thanx in advance,
martyn

Technically the only true mono is when you split a mono signal out to a single speaker because even dual mono has two sound sources. So do what Colin said to an external bus, and then only run it to one speaker. Picky yeah, but I notice the difference between my current mono setup and the old cubase "pseudo mono..."
Martyn, mono is awesome. Try mixing in mono, just once, at a level just below conversation level (except for bass.) Then when you can hear every little element of the song, tap it back out to stereo and crank it up. Instant power, no ear bleedy. Directionality and Fletcher Munson, in full effect....the ironic thing about mixing is that power is created from weakness and weakness from power. |

Whow! Thank you veeery much for your tips! I'll try this, thanx also for the mono-mixing trick, br0d, this sounds interesting too. What do you mean with "external bus"? Do you prefer another method than putting the Waves S1 plugin into the stereo master bus?
Have a nice evening,
martyn

If you have a balance control on your amp, you can get what br0d's talking about (which I wholeheartedly agree with, although it's not something I do myself as I have my own techniques for avoiding ear bleedy) by turning it fully to one side after you've turned on S1, and then just listening to the one speaker. If you have active speakers or an amp with no balance control you'll be able to get the same effect by turning one of the speakers off or turning down one channel on the amp.

press F3 for mixer, go to the master channel and right click on the panning slider. there are 3 available modes. check either Stereo Dual Panner or Stereo Combined Panner. the single slider has now become 2 sliders. you can drag them both to the center, or you can just click on the <L> and type C or 0 (zero) and on the <R> and type C or 0 (zero).
good luck

yeah, exactly...you can always just pan your actual stereo set, i just happen to use an alt mix mono speaker because i wanna take advantage of the opportunity to have a different kind of speaker. ie, my monitors are tannoy, but my mono is a shelf speaker.
i guess auratone is the standard but they can be hard to come by since they are no longer made.

I have a cheap JVC mini hi-fi that I use for a second set of speakers - they give a totally different impression of the sound from my Richard Allan RA8 monitors - but as I use a DS2416 soundcard (for which support in SX has been broken since v1 such that panning a DS channel away from centre renders it impossible to subsequently pan it back to the middle) monitored through an old Yamaha Promix-01 digital mixer it's impossible for me to get true mono.
Anyone got any ideas or suggestions?
