Hi All,

I've been after getting a pair of monitors for some time but am finding it really hard to make a decision.

Currently in a room about 2.5 mtr by 3mtr. I've got around £600 to spend.

Can anyone offer any advice or suggestions within this price range?

Thanks for your time,

Phil

If you want to spend your money wiselly in order to get the best sound possible out off your budget, I would consider sending maybe 400 for speakers and leave 200 left for some accoustic treatment...if 600 is all you have...better a bit less good speakers in good room than better speakers in bad room imo....

Well...just wanted to share my thoughts good luck

In general I would agree but with that budget, I would spend it all on the speakers and then slowly work on the accoustics as finances permit (DIY! It isn't expensive!). I wouldn't want to diminish the budget for speakers in that price range.

this is my shortlist:

Genelec 8030A
Dynaudio BM5A
Mackie HR624
Event ASP6
Adam A7
Tannoy Precision 6

I would however be willing to spend some more money later on.

can you advise regarding acoustic treatment ?

I'm also going to buy a new pair of studio monitors and for that i spent the last month reading almost everything i could find on the net regarding studio monitors up to a price of 1200 euros. My first choice was the Mackie HR-824 and these were the reference to which i compared everything else in the same price range and lower of course.

Dynaudio seems to have a lot of loyal fans all over and the reviews on the music magazines agree on their quality. But they are a bit pricey as well. Personally i don't like that much their looks and this is a very important factor for me.

To conclude i decided to buy the Mackie HR-624. Everyone in the relevant forums agree that they have even better stereo image than the 824's plus that they are more accurate and detailed in the mid-range which was one of the drawbacks of the 824's. Also all the reviews i read about them agree that they are a better solution that the 824's considering also the price difference. A good thing also is that they can be found in a lot of places in very good offers.

Regarding acoustic treatment i'd suggest to search on the net. You'll find tons of information there about everything. And don't forget also about sound insulation which is totally different and in most of our cases very important and necessary.

you can t mix what you don t hear , it s just what i mean , imo for trance you really need to hear what s going neer 40/50 hz or even lower or you can end up with no sub power like lot of psytrance realesed but maybe it s about taste...

yes but u still didnt answer my question!

and i can mix sub bass using monitors that they dont go below 55hz!

a sub bass isnt only 40/30hz they go up to 100hz or more so with a spectum analyzer and good use of eq its possible to mix a sub bass with monitors that dond go down to 30/40hz

I just got a great deal on Dynaudio BM5a's, got em for 725 Euros..I must say i'm really impressed with how flat they are, i could tell right away what was wrong with my mixes..

I had KRK Rokit 6's before but they can't compare at all..So i'd suggest you save up & buy either these or one in a similar category!!           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

Personaly, I would narrow my list to this:

Genelec 8030A
Dynaudio BM5A
Adam A7

I find that the others arn't quite in the same league. Find a shop to check these three out for yourself.

You mean save up a bit first? Then I would go for the BM6's ...

That is a huge topic! I would start by visiting this forum: http://www.soundonsound.com/forum/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=DESIGN
