Where i do music with reason for fun there always much noise in my home, I'm thinking in buying headphones because they are much more cheap then monitors, and should help to a better concentration, i will use it at low level to not damage my ears, what's your opinion ? Monitors are much better and i should buy or a headphones do the work? if yes tell me about good headphones for production.

I use both. Mostly i write music in headphones, because i am not alone in my flat and work at nightime usually, but everyday i find some time to check on monitors what i have done this night

If monitors is not really an option, then headphones should be the solution. Keeping low levels is essential as you already mentioned.
Since you want to be totally isolated from the others and probably the others from you as well, closed headphones is what you need.
Personally i use the Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro and i am very satisfied. I plan on buying a couple pairs more for the artists i record.
They are not super expensive but they are not that cheap either(i know this is also very subjective), but they worth it.

Since I don't have to worry about disturbing neighbors or roomies really, I only use headphones when I need to listen to a sound very clearly, like when searching for some muddy frequencies, or something.
I feel headphones are OK for writing & arranging the music, but when it comes to mixing & mastering, you need monitors to do the job better.

Well..Madscientist and me spend a lot of time in checking wich headphonw might be suitable...so we decided bd 990 pro and nothing else...but it is your thing...so try as much hreadphones as you can try..and then decide...so...never do final mixing on headphones---get very big speakewrs or check your stuff while friend of you are setting up big pa or whatever...so do not trust your music...as long as it is on simple speakers.............use headphones to adjust reverb and delay to your sound..so that you are not influenced by your room..jmt

Monitors. But headphones are definitely valuable as well - I use my beyerdynamic dt-150 to compose and for checking the lower freq's. These headphones go down really low.

I always check my productions on my headphones after writing with monitors, and then adjust. After that I check it on various stereos/car stereo to see if something is too loud...

Alex, did you go for the 250ohm or 80ohm ones? can you also explain why you chose one over the other? |

I chose the Pro(250Ohms) version because you can drive them a lot harder with less fatigue and saturation/distortion in the cases where loud listening is needed.
But this means either that the audio interface's headphone output has enough power to drive them efficiently or a headphone amp is present. Otherwise they will never go loud(or as loud someone would want).
Lower resistance headphones on the other hand require less power to sound loud but they would give you ear fatigue and would saturate and distort the sound if driven harder.
I don't know how right or wrong i am on this, but what i know for sure is that when i use the 770s with the DAC-1, no matter how loud i go(not that loud as i don't want to get deaf, but loud enough) the sound remains
always clean and undistorted.
Electrostatic headphones is a whole different story, and until now i haven't yet seen anyone in pro music production using them. I have no idea why, as they seem to be very good performers overall. I suppose it could be their price.
The AKG-1000 were discontinued a couple of years ago, if i remember right. The best electrostats always were the STAXX.
But they do need a seriously long "burn in" time before they start performing.
