exactly this!
think that the active monitors have amps built ESPECIALLY for them!

also the value for money is virtually nothing..so why bother thinkin??

Yes i've calculated that the net present value of the active's is higher so my future cash flows will determine when i purchase them!

Sorry i've been cramming for my finance exam

I know that the head designer at dynaudio said that passive is just as good if you use a good amp.

Normally the recommendation is to spend 50% on the speakers and 50% on the amp for optimum performance, so it will not usually be cheaper to get a passive setup that compares well with the active counterpart.

I was very much pro active speakers until an amp died in one of my monitors and it turned out to be a big hassle to get it fixed and I now prefer to have amp and speaker separate.

Provided you are capable of finding a amp well suited for the monitors there is still a couple of advantages when it comes to active speakers.
It should be better to have a bi-amped setup which is usually the case with active monitors.
Also passive crossovers (which is what you have in an active monitor) should also be preferable compared to active (found in passive monitors).

The amps are not usually built to match the speakers, but selected to be a good match....but in reality sometimes the amps in a active monitors is not always as ideal as one would think and corners have been cut with both quality and power output to keep the price in an acceptable range.
I been comparing many speakers and the difference between the active and passive versions can be very big indeed, but sometimes in favour of the passive versions, so it doesn't seem to me like it's an universal truth that active is better and it depends from model to model.
I only been using passive dynaudios though so I don't know how their active and passive versions compare.

But I would for sure look for a nice deal on a good and powerful amp and get the passive version.
All-in-one is all very nice...as long as it works, but if something breaks it sucks.

I must agree with Spindrift here. I never been a big fan of amplified monitors. I believe that sound wise is not less good to get quality amp and passive monitors, and for future reference when shit hits the fan it is definitely much better.

And shit hits the fan from time to time           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

yeap i can agree one that 2!

but in a real world when people realy dont know when an amp is suitable for the monitors they get its common they will make a bad dissision and spend the same amount of money that a good set of amp+monitors in the active field would save them time money and quality of resoltes!

in the case when the shit hits the fun its better to stay behind the fun! but i think its better to wait for the monitor to get fixed if it has a broken amp then spending the same amount of money that the actives cost and have a bad match between those 2!

Active all the way...

I recentley went to the PMC speaker factory where they demo'd some of their active's/passives and the actives had so much better definition IMO.

this makes interesting reading...

PoM i heard the opposite too, depends on the amp. it's a matter of taste and money. but one thing i tell you. to get a passive setup better than an active of the same speakers you'll pay much more money.

What about the noise from the amp, I guess a good amp wouldnt be that noisy, but then it would be very expensive........ Id go for the Actives
